Ron went with me to his first con on Sunday. I dressed as Adam Lambert. I’m not sure what Ron’s dog thought as I stopped to pick him up.
Christine had asked me to help with the panel, “Surviving the Big Cons.” I just added my $0.02 here and there, mostly from the costumer’s point of view. She had a great outline for it. You can find it
here (registration is required). We talked about what to pack, weighing the costs/advantages of flying vs. driving, rooming with other costumers, and more.
Ron and I walked around and looked at the booths, ate lunch, and hung around the SFAP table until they began lining people up for the costume contest.
Part of what makes the contest at Comicon so fun is the emcee. He is one of the more serious costumers in the area. He knows most fandoms enough to make jokes that only geeks get, and he keeps things moving.
I entered as Adam, which technically wouldn’t qualify because he’s not sci-fi/fantasy/comic book - and I didn’t really think about that (Perhaps it depends on whose fantasy we’re talking about!). I just knew that, as awesome as Gerard is, I didn’t have an act for him, and you have to have a decent act to impress the judges at this contest. I decided I could at least sing a bit of “Mad World” as Adam.
I’ve been costuming at this con and doing contests there long enough that the emcee knows me. As I was standing in the doorway, ready to make my entrance, I saw him look at the paper with my name and costume on it. He stopped, turned to look at me, and started laughing. I could tell he loved it! This is why I was grinning as I took the stage. The audience liked the performance and applauded loudly as I left.
The judges decided they wanted to give me a prize, despite the fact that I wasn’t technically sci-fi/fantasy/comic. So the wrangled an artist at the con for a bit of artwork to give me. :)
Artwork by
Brian Maze I think Ron enjoyed himself hanging out with Adam for a day. ;) At least he could kiss me without a mustache this time. ;)
