Oh, So this is a good thing, sort of. Anybody who has to deal with childcare in PA is probably aware of the STARS program, which is basically a funding/improvement thing for centers. It's currently voluntary, but It's looking like it won't be for a lot longer, so the smart places have already started. We're at star 2, which isn't too bad. Anyway, one of the requirements is having more teachers who are actually (gasp) qualified to teach. (currently, per state regs, 16 year olds can work in a daycare center.) Anyway, the basic qualification they're going to be requiring is a Child Development Associate(CDA). (And in truth a lot of places that pay more than minimum wage are already requiring that.) The point is, my boss, who is good even though she does only pay minimum wage, has decided that some of the people who work at our center should have this. It will probably take roughly the summer to complete.
She informed me yesterday that I didn't really have a choice in the matter per se. Basically, she said I could meet the coursework requirements standing on my head, it would make the rest of them look good, and then I'd have at least that much extra education which will look better when I start applying for real college. None of which I can really argue with. Also, while she's planning on ordering video coursework for everyone else (the center is footing the bill for anyone taking the classes) She's offered to Register me for online coursework, so that I'm able to work at a quicker pace, from home, and not have to use the TV (which annoys me because the center TVs are un-captioned and therefore completely useless to me)
So, I mean, Whereas I'm not Planning on changing diapers for the rest of my life, I am planning on teaching; So I figure this kind of certification can't hurt. (Oh, and hai, I finally decided on doing something with my life!) And really, After self-educating for the last nine years, the idea of getting something formal feels good, ya know?
