I finished reading the His Dark Materials trilogy today.

I am beyond shocked that the crazy book banning people are not all over this. It's about killing God! I mean, whatever, that's fine, but I just thought I was reading a fantasy novel at first

there was a big book-banning fuss about it when it was first released in the US about 10 years ago but then it died down because it wasn't a best seller (possibly for many of the reasons you mention--it does go from a taut thriller to just blegh along the way).

um, people freaked out about this book when it came out. people also FREAKED THE FUCK OUT when the movie came out. can't stop the crazies.
