not all businesses are created equal

I went to Tech Cocktail's Chicago Mixer & Startup Showcase today. It was... overwhelming, a little bit. I don't think people really go to these alone, or at least, enough people don't that the people who do have to be really resilient. At least it was easy to inebriate yourself.

I learned...
* not all businesses are created equal, really. Some people insist on reinventing the wheel, others insist on tweaking an existing business model and going up against Goliath. It's clear that not all of these startups will exist in a year.

* some ideas are pretty great, though! I think consumer-driven healthcare is a cool place, there's nothing new at all to composting but I want to do it, and monetizing social media is something that sounds like it would gain traction easily. On-demand dry cleaning, too, sounds like something that would sell well in our times.

* these are great opportunities, but so many people don't take advantage. I don't understand why no sales people from my company were there, it's so easy! I met at least a dozen people and I didn't even feel social enough to try.

I do kind of think that technology is in a bubble state that isn't sustainable. Not everything can be crowdsourced or crowdfunded or powered by an app with no middlemen, surely. But maybe for a little longer...
