I stayed up too late finishing Girl with a Pearl Earring, which I had been wanting to read for years. I found it surprisingly compelling -- I do like historical fiction, but I wasn't expecting to end up finishing it in a sitting. It was enjoyable, but I don't know how much of it will remain with me.
Throughout it, though, I was annoyed with the main character's fascination with Vermeer when he clearly didn't really care. It's sad (and probably true) that we can't just accept, then, the people who do pay attention to us. The butcher's son was handsome, relatively well off, and really liked her!
Later, my parents took me to see The Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian. I had been wanting to see this for a while, too, and it was really interesting. The theater itself was really cool and had a lot of special things built into it for the show. I am a bit underwhelmed by the actual story / execution after all I've heard about it, but the music was really pretty and the actress who played Christine had a very good voice. I expected the Phantom to be a more sympathetic character, though... I don't know if it's because the Vegas version is 90 minutes (instead of the normal 120?) but I felt that the story lacked depth.
I think we have the movie lying around somewhere, though, so I'm anxious to see how it differs.
