As much as she loved Fandom, Ada hated fall on the East Coast, she really really did. It was cold and wet and rainy and still humid and there was too much water. It gave her a headache and made the skin around her scales itch like mad. And after handling the water balloons in Mr. Rand's class, her hands were itching too

...So there he was, knocking.

"Come in!" Ada yelled, sitting up on her bed. "Unless you're gonna talk politics or be serious, then you can fuck right off!"
WHAT? The cold and wet and itching was bad enough, the last thing she needed was depressing, which is why she was watching a movie about tornado-sharks.

Look, you had your methods of political protest, and Ada had hers. Catching politicians in flagrante delicto seemed like a good one.
"Not much up, 'cept cold an' wet, an' it's making me nuts," she said, waving a hand at the window. "An' whatever th' hell this weekend was. I think I was a robot?"

"No clue what was going on either. Some weird black trenchcoat shit."

"I think Lucille was hitting on me?" she shared, absent-mindedly rubbing at her arms. Because coming from Lucille, that was weird, especially after her behaviour at Homecoming. "Didn't know robot-sexual was a thing."

Like, say, throwing money at people and then running away in the middle of a perfectly innocent kissing both conversation. Just thinking about it made Ada frown and pick at her arm some more in frustration.
"I dunno. It's all really hazy. But bein' a robot seemed t' be kinda cool. I was sparkly!"

"Anyway. You're already sparkly," he pointed out, reaching out to touch her shoulder.

She smiled, scooting closer to him. "Though I dunno if th' school could handle me bein' even more sparkly than I am now, I might cause a glitter paradox or something." The itching was really starting to drive her nuts, and she rubbed at her arm harder. Maybe some calamine lotion later would help. "That can wait until later, far as 'm concerned. I got plenty of time t' be a sparkle princess."
That was when there was the sickening sound of something tearing, almost like paper, and Ada watched in shock as the skin on the soft underside of her arm sloughed off, leaving new, glistening baby scales all along its length.
She was just going to sit there, wide-eyed and shaking, as her tried to process what was happening. It hurt. It hurt so badly, ( ... )

Except that wasn't how it worked, not really, and the skin of Ada's other arm started to crack.

Of course there wasn't. She'd be doing it right now if she did. Fuck fuck fuck what should he do?

"'M never making jokes about how much time I got t' be a sparkle princess again," she muttered, letting the discarded skin drop in to her lap. She'd throw it away in a moment, for now she was going to turn her arm back-and-forth, checking to see where the tiny scales ended and skin resumed. "Why's it gotta hurt so much?"
Yes, she was ignoring her other arm for the moment. Ada felt no need to tempt fate by calling attention to it.

He didn't know. He didn't know much of anything, a fact that hit him - along with a sudden sense of deep sorrow.
It was easy to ignore stuff like this if you thought you were going to die any minute; pretend Ada wasn't going to go off the deep end sometime. But-- fuck. Nevermind leaning. He hugged her closer.

Then; "Sorry," she said in a little voice. "You weren't ever supposed t' see that."
The process was kinda gross. Ada hadn't wanted to expose her friends to it. Ever.
