Episode 5x05 A Night At The Bones Museum

Spo... spo... spo... spoilers! (see David Bowie)

I hadn't gotten around to review the latest Bones ep yet. In a way, it was too good to be dispensed with quickly. Where to start? At the end of course! The final scene was just so emotional but understated, set in such a lush, symbolic environment that it overwhelms my memory.

Brennan and Booth looking at one another across the ruby "heart" of the pharaoh's son... magic! Her luscious cleavage didn't hurt either-I'm not made of stone. The almost-kiss was almost more beautiful than a simple kissing scene would've been. What is more, the interruption by the squints didn't reduce them to embarrassed shyness: it is inevitable that they will let the truth manifest itself soon now.

There was another relationship that ended the episode on an up note: Dr. Sweets and Daisy Wick. They had a tiff but reconciled in the Egyptian storage room-Hodgins and Angela always loved an antique setting for their trysts too... Some photos of the labels used for the Egyptian exhibition were posted online:

Nice to see a Belgian contribution: a so-called "Orientalist" painting by Jean-François Portaels from the "Koninkli[j]ke Muse voor Schone Kunsten van België" in Brussels. Interestingly, they used the Dutch name of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (official English name). It is customary in English to prefer the French version of Belgian proper nouns over the Dutch ones even if they refer to the Dutch-speaking part (a.k.a. Flanders), e.g., Bruges (French) instead of Brugge (Dutch). The French name is "Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique." Actually, while Belgium as a whole is about 60% Dutch-speaking and 40% French-speaking, the capital district of Brussels, an enclave in the Dutch-speaking northern part, is about 75% French-speaking and 25% Dutch-speaking so the 1st local language is French in the first place. Maybe one of the set designers is Dutch or Flemish or has ties to the Netherlands or Flanders? One would think they wouldn't let the typos slip by though in that case... Here's an example of one of Portaels' pieces (not a painting, I know, but the subject matter is at least "Egyptian"):

"Dance in the Ruins of Karnak"

Earlier in the episode, Brennan and Daisy (the intern/girlfriend of Sweets), are squealing with glee when realizing that they have made an exciting discovery concerning the mummy. It seems to me that Daisy is a young version of Brennan before she became all serious and professional: excitable but geeky, arrogant but sweet.

Also, when Sweets begs Brennan to reconsider Daisy for an internship "as a personal favor," Booth helps her understand that she should consent and she does. This is one more example of how much more "human" she is becoming thanks to her relationship with Booth. Brennan displays more of her seldom-seen youthful enthusiasm in her acting out the scene from the silent-movie classic "The Mummy." Poor Angela is horrified... just like she was when Brennan was squealing together with Daisy earlier.

A few more mummy high jinks: Cam saying that Hodgins found some 3,000-year-old bugs, so he's all weepy. The opening scene of the ep, when Booth ominously wonders if the mummy killed someone was fun too as was Booth & Brennan finding the sarcophagus is bleeding... Cam slicing up poor Dr. Kaswell's brain was deliciously campy too-really, was that really necessary, the cause of death had already been established, right?

Finally, let's return to Booth & Brennan's charming evolving relationship. So Brennan is on a date with Booth's boss's boss (Andrew) but can't help bringing up Booth again and again. She tells the story of how Booth doesn't like meatloaf with a (boiled) egg in it because his mother pretended that it was an eye. Angela conveniently texts Brennan to come to the lab and she leaves the restaurant to go to the Jeffersonian. Here we have a delicious match cut (scene transition through a similar element): Brennan's backside as she walks away and Brennan's backside as she enters Angela's office.

Of course, the final scene wouldn't have been possible if not for the reveal of Brennan's unintentional "betrayal" by telling the meatloaf-and-egg story to Andrew. In a very poignant scene, Booth comes into her office and puts an egg on her desk. She is first feisty but then displays very clear dismay at finding out that this story wasn't one he told anyone else about. It was ours, he says, one of the many things we share that should stay ours. She is acutely aware of his hurt feelings and reconsiders a lot of things.

She disinvites her date, Andrew, and instead takes Booth to the special-exhibit opening and lecture by her at the museum. Not a lot of words end up being spoken in the final scene but Emily Deschanel esp. is great in conveying her emotions through subtle facial expressions just as she did throughout the twists and turns earlier in the ep. Conclusion: this was another great hour of TV.
