More on season finale

I've been reading a lot of opinions, diatribes, praises, discussions and more about episode 5x22 "The Beginning in the End." I still stand by my initial assessment: it was not a good episode, definitely not well executed even if the script/idea was maybe OK. The main problem I still have is that I felt dumped as a loyal fan, disrespected. There were too many things that didn't make sense, that felt like they were artificial, just convenient to get to certain points. For instance, Booth going to Afghanistan: why can't he just train soldiers here in the US? Brennan going for one year to the Maluku islands: too long, at least part of the time should be spent in Jakarta where remains of such importance would definitely be sent to, where there are modern facilities to utilize specialized, cutting-edge techniques of analysis. They will both be back exactly one year from the scene in the airport: that's just silly, real life doesn't work like that. No way would they be back at the same time. Why couldn't they tell each other they will stay in touch? Soldiers in the Mid East as well as scientists in the field nowadays use the internet frequently, nothing special there. Bones is very rich, she can take a satellite telephone with her to provide her laptop with internet access. On US bases there's always internet access. Angst and frustration may be fun but there comes a time when fans need something more positive to hang their hopes on, esp. during a season final episode. Teasing should not turn into taunting. I understand that everyone has different pain thresholds of course but still, please don't turn Bones into season 6 of House M.D.

Now about the 1st ep of season 6 starting immediately after that token one year, as producer Nathan has confirmed: that could work but it's gotta be well written not to end up feeling very pat, to remain believable. A complete reset of the B&B relationship would be hard to digest. Even House and Cuddy on House M.D. are giving it a try, surely we should be able to expect at least the same from B&B? Relationships of opposites are always fun, full of possibilities. That is exactly the new angle for the show that is needed now: how to balance work and relationship, money disparity issues, having a baby or not, living arrangements, conflict with superiors/regulations, book publisher's pressures to capitalize on B&B, Brennan going on tour as a writer-rock star with Booth as entourage, falling-outs, getting to know (more of) the family/relatives both ways, going on vacation and arguing about relaxing on the beach vs. visiting museums, Brennan having trouble writing a new novel because not enough time now, ... The possibilities are endless. Finally, the more-or-less confirmed rumor from usually-reliable source Marisa Roffman that either Booth or Brennan will have a new significant other: again, dangerous as this has been done quite enough already, it has to make some sense and be more than just a token, throw-away character.

Conclusion: I don't like the leaden feeling in my gut going into the long summer hiatus. I'll watch the new season, sure, but please don't take my "devotion" for granted, OK?
