Bones' "The Price for the Past" was a tough case for Booth, as it was revealed that the victim was none other thanAldo Clemens. As the FBI and Jeffersonian investigated, however, they discovered that not only was Aldo tortured, but that he made the ultimate sacrifice to protect someone.

Here are the most heartbreaking moments from "The Price for the Past."

Brennan Realized the Victim Was Aldo

There were multiple signs of trauma to the victim's body consistent with battle, as well as a condition that suggested extensive kneeling, as seen in someone in manual labor or devoutly religious. Not many priests have seen combat, Brennan realized, and she took a look at the ossicles of his ear, finding fractures from 14 years ago similar to Booth's.

Brennan then had Angela pull up her facial reconstruction and add black hair and blue eyes. The victim was Aldo Clemens. "Booth said that when he was in trouble Aldo saved him. He owed Aldo his life," Brennan told the others.

Booth Refused to Let Himself off the Hook

He hadn't spoken to Aldo in over a year, so he had no idea what was going on with him. "Any time I needed anything -- anything -- Aldo was always there for me," he said.

He could've gotten Aldo help, he later told Brennan. Now, all he could do was get revenge, and he could do so by following the rules, she explained: "The act of bringing a murderer to justice is, anthropologically speaking, a form of revenge. You have suffered a loss. Making the killer suffer for that loss will help." Booth hoped so, because at the moment, he "couldn't feel much worse."

Cam Told Jessica Why Aldo Left the Priesthood After He Returned

"Booth once told me that Aldo never stopped believing in God but that his belief no longer comforted him, not after what he'd seen, so how could he make it his life's work?"

Booth Got into It with One of the Men from His Unit

When he went to talk to them about Aldo, Ted called him out on only showing up when one of them died. He moved on, Ted argued, and had a family, something that wasn't as easy for the rest of them. "I'm here now," Booth said. "It's too late for that," Ted countered. "I'm done with you, like you were done with all of us."

Booth Told Brennan "Aldo Had No One"

"These guys saw hell," he shared. "Most of them are still paying the price." While Booth feels the effects of the war as well, he "got lucky," with a "great family" and a "great life" and Brennan "in [his] corner." Aldo didn't have that.

Sadly, One of the Men in Their Unit Could Have Killed Aldo

"They carry anger, they are taught to kill. There are many recountings starting with ancient Greeks of returning warriors murdering those they are closest to," Brennan explained to Cam.

Aldo Was Tortured Before His Death

Upon reexamining the bones, Jessica discovered that Aldo was alive when the rats were eating his torso, and "horrifying" was the only way to describe that. But that wasn't all. Brennan found contusions on his ribs in a pattern consistent with a cage being pressed up against his torso. In the middle ages, a cage was filled with rats and one end heated so that the animals were forced to burrow into the body of the still-living victim. The hundreds of bites they saw suggested that Aldo was tortured for an extended period of time.

Booth Realized Aldo Sacrificed Himself ...

Despite the horrific torture, Aldo's death was "relatively quick" and "humane," a transected cervical spinal cord. Why would the killer do that? He didn't. Once they realized the tape holding Aldo to the table had been torn, not cut, they discovered what really happened: Aldo killed himself. He loosened the tape enough to give him some range of motion and pushed himself back enough to break his own neck on the end of the table.

But suicide is a cardinal sin and he was a priest, Caroline protested. It wasn't a suicide, Booth explained. It was a sacrifice. He was trying to protect someone.

... and He Did It to Protect Booth
Booth and Brennan had found an X-ray in the sound studio where Aldo was tortured, and Booth knew who that X-ray belonged to: a warlord he killed in Bosnia in 1995. He killed him right in front of his son, and he had allies and family. "This is about revenge," Booth said.
¨Aldo knew he was the shooter, and he killed himself so he wouldn't have to give him up.
