Can 'Bones' find new life? It's "always possible"

PASADENA, Calif. - After 12 years, the Bones gang is finally breaking up.

Created by Hart Hanson and starring Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, Bones has been a mainstay of the Fox schedule for 12 seasons. But all things end - and at the end of this season, so will Bones.

"We've had a really great run," Deschanel told television critics Wednesday. "It would be ungracious of us to be complaining about cancellation."

They could have complained that the last season is a short one, 12 episodes instead of the usual 22, but Boreanaz says the "12 episodes feel like a full order. We really crammed in a lot." That includes visits from former stars like Eric Millegan and former guests like Stephen Fry, Cyndi Lauper and Betty White.

Though no one, of course, is ready to say how it will end, Deschanel says they at least have had practice in preparing for it. "We've had several season finales that could have been our last, and at times, we didn't know if they would be our last."

The truly amazing thing about Bones' long run, says Hanson, is that the show always seemed to be on the verge of cancellation. "The first thing I remember is being picked up for the (season's final nine episodes), and being astounded that we were extended for the rest of our first season. I feel like I was on the bubble all the time."

Even when the show was picked up, finding it could be a problem. As Bones fans know, the show was constantly being moved around the schedule - landing, Deschanel says, into "20 different time slots."

But the show survived. "This amazing thing happened," says Hanson. "Our fans, who are loud and passionate, would follow us. I'm sure that the reason we're around is that the network moved us around all the time and proved that we were bullet-proof."

But bullet-proof no more. Then again, just because this season is called "The Final Chapter," that doesn't necessarily mean this is the end. TV is filled with revivals these days, and Bones could someday be one of them.

"Those things are always possible" says Hanson, "and very desirable."
