"What sound does a gopher make?" does not return any useful results from Google.
After multiple search refinements that led to my digging fruitlessly through .PDFs and making a visit to a virtual zoo, I am still burning with curiosity. One forum suggests that "parp" is the onomatopoeia, but this claim is surrounded by evidence of the poster's brain worms.
A National Wildlife Federation article seems to be suggesting that gophers bark. I know prairie dogs bark, so I choose to believe in barking gophers until I can think of some yet untried combinations of "gophers," "cry," "sound," "make," and/or "bark" to feed Google.
ETA: They chirp or chitter. I know this thanks to finally realizing that +pet is more helpful than -pest. Another mystery solved!
