Finished rereading Dune

So I finished rereading Dune, a novel I'd read about fifteen years ago, and which I'd enjoyed a lot back in the day.  Back then, I found the first two-thirds of the novel a biit of a plod, but was fascinated by the last hundred and fifty pages.  Well, history has repeated itself, except that I knew how things were going to turn out, so it wasn't quite as mind-blowing an experience.  Still enjoyed it more than most of the new stuff I've read lately...

The reason I reread it is that I bought an Easton Press copy of the book.  This is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful books I own.  Bound in red leather, it weighs a ton, has both color and B&W illustrations and is a fitting replacement for the original, inherited paperback, which was on its last legs and has been donated to a friend.  It includes an introduction / memorial by many of Herbert's friends that is very emotional and absolutely fitting to this edition.  The Masterpieces of Science Fiction collection is truly worth subscribing to if you can afford the 50 bucks a month that these things cost.  I just love them, and Dune seems to be thebook on which they went all out (not all the titles are as lavishly produced).  If it weren't for the fact that they have trouble getting the books to Argentina, Easton press would be among my favorite people in the universe.  Sadly, their mailing people aren't as good as their production people, and I have to write every six or seven months to ask them to resend the books that didn't make it (fortunately, their customer service department is very good).  This is a mystery, since I've never, ever had an Amazon shipment go astray.

In other news, I sent out some subs and also wrote about twenty words into an alt-history story I want to write.  More Etruscans!

writing, books not written by me, science fiction
