Maybe its having no sleep and taking Mum to the airport at 5am this morning that did it, but is it just me or does this 'article' on orphans and widows say absolutely nothing?

I followed a link from a css blog to it since they claimed it was 'decent' but THEY LIED. O_O;;

work, css, design

it says what they are and how they function? Not much for how to utilize them, but it tells you what they do about how the w3 specs do.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO KNOW???

LOL Yeah I think I was just very not-awake when I was reading it, I'd fallen asleep twice already at my desk by then and it was VERY early in the day. XD But yeah it doesn't say anything about how its actually a print-media allowance, that its a tag that more people should atleast consider when doing their work and why. That kind of thing its very... clinical and not-explanatory friendly.

The example is totally useless XD Its not even a paragraph! XD

LOL! I was reading an article that linked to it as something recommended for atleast consideration when working on sites as it serves more purpose than first glance would attest. So, clicking on that link to go and read more on the subject I'm faced with no such further reading.

If I am to consider using it, I kinda would like to know why. XD

It certainly isn't indecent. ;)

It's actually part of this Yes as an article on orphans it's pretty basic, but what else could we think of to put in

Which isn't a lot really, is it? bondchick_nett April 20 2007, 04:38:18 UTC
LOL! You have your fingers in everything my cousin! <33333

Well, thats true, its not scandalously indecent, but its certainly not what one would hope for in a complete article. There's LOADS one could think of to put in there -- an actual example for one. The orphans example there is totally useless, one sentence does not a paragraph make. And that doesn't help the example in relation to the rest of the page and content flow.

"The orphans property defines the minimum number of lines of a paragraph that must be left at the bottom of a page."What does that even mean? Its not clunky english, sure, and its not supposed to be conversational english as it is an official article. But it still seems less than explanatory -- perhaps just not elaborate enough for complete comprehension ( ... )

I didn't have anything to do with it. By the "we" I meant what can we think of that they should also put in there. I was thinking that the next step would be an explanation of orphans and widows. But it seems that they haven't gone into explaining terms in that reference, everything assumes you know what the typographical terms mean and they only explain the CSS properties.

But they don't really explain anything. They give a short meaning, but not an explanation. You know what I mean?

Erm... chaosbunny April 17 2007, 10:29:54 UTC
Well, it certainly didn't say what I expected it to...except for the little link at the bottom that said "Help orphans, $20 a month" or some such...*sheepish grin*

*giggles* if you type orphans in in wikipedia, it gives you exactly what you're thinking of, instead of the disambiguation page. XD XD

What would you want it to say? anonymous April 19 2007, 02:47:11 UTC
If the article isn't "decent" what would make it so, in your opinion? In other words, why do you say that other site lied? I'm not actually sure what more can be said about orphans and widows - it's a way to format text for print, and Web pages don't generally have them. So you get an explanation of how to use the style properties. But I'm sure the author would be willing to update it or add another article making it "decent" if you had criticism that was actionable...

Wow, you seem a little more than defensive for someone replying in a personal journal anonymously, especially when I say all over that post that I am pretty much not-functioning XD. But nevertheless I can see what you're trying to say, you're right I was not at all constructively critical at all. If you check my reply to monotonehell, I've got some thoughts on how it could be improved, they're minimal and you might think they're discardable but pesonally I think thats all it would take to raise the 'article' from existing to informative.

Perhaps being able to cite some links to places where it is used? I know that can be hard, deep linking to stuff that could go down at any moment due to the liquid nature of the web, so perhaps not optimally advisable, but it could be a useful tool to make the article well-rounded and complete?
