The Unpatriotic Apathetic

And so it's a holiday and I'm at work...being the slave that I've been for the past 4 years. On my way to work earlier today I saw something intersting. There was this middle-aged man riding the jeepney with me and he was grazing this particular book. It didn't take long before I recognized it was a one of those travel guide books and yes, embossed clearly in it's cover was the word PHILIPPINES.

I was surprised to say the least. Dozen of thoughts ran through my head. Thoughts like, "Why is he reading a travel guide to the Philippines? He is a Filipino after all," "Shouldn't it be USA or Japan or Italy?" "What is there to see in this country?"

That's where it halted. I realized I hardly ever been to anywhere in our country. I am one of those 'dayuhan sa sariling bayan'. Unfortunately, there's many others like me who constantly dreams of setting their foot in foreign soil and not having an ounce of the same interest towards ours. If foreign tourists can enthusiastically say that they find the Philippines beautiful then why can't we?

We have 7,107 islands. There's a lot to see and discover... and I will.

The sky is gloomy and the sun gave way for some early morning downpour. A symbolism perhaps, of how many people are weeping today that Cory Aquino is after all put to her final destination. I can't share much about how I feel about what's happened. I don't remember much about Cory mostly because I was still young during her tenure and even more so because I don't really pay attention to anything related to politics. That's how I've always been towards it... apathetic. Not good I know. Nevertheless, I know that she played a great part in uniting the Filipinos in the first ever EDSA revolution and the number of Filipinos mourning right now accounts for what she's done. Apart from that, the other thing I won't ever forget about her is that we shared the same birthday.

Anyway, I decided to wear a yellow shirt today as a sign of respect. And seeing a number of people who did the same on my way to work, is just simply...moving.

Rest In Peace, Corazon Aquino.
