When you work in this industry, you are given a bit of a head shake on the reality of things. I am lucky enough to work for a company that has, so far, planted trees, not airplanes. But I know for a certainty that one day will come, when we are not so fortunate, and I have been well trained for that situation. That moment, among many others, will truly define who we are, and how we do business. Companies have been destroyed by how they handle these disasters, even it it was not their fault. Others have pulled through, despite the fact they were completely liable for the incident.

There's a numerical representation: it's 1 in 1.5 million. It hasn't changed since the 50's, and it represents the chances of an aircraft crashing for each take off.

I wrote that academically, but when I read it, it's damn cold. I guess as you get trained for the eventuality, you get numbed to it a bit.

I promise to whoever reads this is that I will never allow an aircraft to leave if I believe it to be unsafe.
