I'm floating on a cloud of happiness. Mmmmm, seriously. Last night was an amazing, amazing evening of music and I was there. UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL. Holy shit, I can't tell you how awesome it was. I was less than five feet away from INXS. 5 FEET AWAY FROM JD ( Read more... )

Some fantasy fiction you may be interested in, based on titles alone:

This novella is more about the painting than the song and isn't available on these shores, unless you make a special order, I guess.

This novel is available in Fully Booked though, as well as several of the other novels in the sequence. Check out those titles!

OH! The first one made me squeal. Seriously. How do you find these things, sir?! These are great gems! I love the painting and the song equally, and the book sounds really interesting. Of course, I won't be able to read it anytime soon but well... I like knowing it exists. :)

But the second... wow. I want that book (and all the rest of the titles in the series) BADLY. It sounds so cool. What better way to resolve political turmoil than with rock stars? That's what I always thought anyway. ^_^ Available at Fully Booked? Do you mean the one at Rockwell? Might there be one in Greenhills, by any chance?

I have this masochistic tendency to always try to be updated on small-press titles. The one who released the Chadbourn is one of those publishers I've always been interested in but have yet to acquire any of their releases. I'm more interested in his horror writing--like "The King of Rain--but this one caught my eye, too, even if I'm not that interested in Faerie and stuff like that.

As for Jones, the short story that became the basis for the first novel is available online if you want to sample her style (perhaps not so much the story, since the world she depicts is obviously far bigger in the novel sequence). Incidentally, I first read that story in an anthology that you might find interesting: In Dreams: A Celebration of the 7-Inch Single in Original SF and Horror Fiction.

FB-Gateway has it, and I presume the Greenhills and Rockwell branches do, too. Give them a call to be certain. They may even hold it for you for a day or two.

That's just... painful, sir. How could you stand it? I can't even browse Amazon without feeling the agony of lusting after something I can't have (because those are the things I usually yearn for. LOL. Out-of-print books and I have a complicated relationship.)

OH, that's why his name sounded familiar. "The King of Rain" was an... interesting read. Especially at 3AM. Did I ever tell you that? Yeah... I read it at 3AM. :P For atmospheric purposes.

OHHHH MY LORD. That anthology sounds great! WOW. I WANT IT. (See? This is my problem with mentioning books that I will never get to buy. *whimper* Although I just received a paycheck to be able to buy a new book, I have to save up for something that I actually NEED. Oh, the inhumanity of buying things for SCHOOL instead of LEISURE.) :(

It is painful, but it's not impossible for me to acquire. I have an annual splurge at Amazon.Com, and they carry some of the small-press titles I'm into. My big problem is when the edition is so limited that I must figure out a way to order direct from the publisher. That's usually when I miss out on the titles I want.

Make a list of the books you're looking for. If you don't mind secondhand copies, I can let you know if I find anything in BookSale branches. And if it's out of print, there are still ways...sometimes.

I'm pleased you read "King of Rain" at my recommended time. Doesn't it exhibit more narrative power that way? *evil grin*

The anthology is pretty good, but that's out of print. I did buy my copy here, so if another turns up, I'll let you know.

Annual splurge? I can't imagine how much you spend on that annual splurge! That's practically bingeing. Hahahaha. :)

As for books I want, there are really only two kinds of books that I'd go out of my way for to buy: history of rock and roll books (especially if they're like Gillet's: commenting on the state of society and politics at the moment) and history books, particularly counterfactual history books. :D Please let me know about any of those books, or the Anthology. Thanks SO much. :D

You're absolutely correct that it's pretty much bingeing. The special thing is that these are online orders, so I always make sure to get the stuff that would be impossible to buy in (and perhaps tough to order through) brick-and-mortar bookstores here.

It doesn't cost me as much as it should, thanks to Amazon.Com prices which are lower than the SRP's. This year, I'll owe my Mum US$ 81.59 for four hardcovers and a trade paperback. Without the Amazon.Com discounts, I would have had to pay US$ 127.85!

2005's annual splurge was great, because I got a stack of books for a dollar each, and the Amazon.Com purchases became a belated birthday gift.

I'll keep an eye out for the Catsky-books then and let you know. By "counterfactual," you refer to those which take a somewhat revisionist view of events, right?
