A sad day
I just read James Brown died this morning, and that makes me sad. That crazy old man....
I would argue he was THE most influential musician of our times, not only dropping some ridiculous 'chunes, but jump-starting several genres of music AND dance. Many hold that a televised performance of "Get on the Good Foot", which saw Brown dropping to the floor during a break in the song as what started breakdancing. The influences in Rap and Hip-Hop are obvious, but many also contend that the very music I love with every part of my body owes it's existence to James Brown. The drum beat solo from "Funky Drummer", along with the "Amen Break" (that is fucking annoying!!) are the two essential riffs sampled and used in drum n bass. Many contend that the "Funky Drummer" drum break is the most sampled piece in history, and I would have no doubt, it and the Amen break are everywhere!
So, I will mourn the loss of the Godfather of Soul by blasting what drum n bass tracks I have that sample Funky Drummer and other James brown remixes loud as hell while I pen a letter.
