some of us wouldn’t be lying if we said were trying too hard

JEEZ LOUISE!

I don’t know where to start. I’m still recovering. And as usual, I give crappy concert reviews. So be prepared.

Both shows for Hot Hot Heat and The Walkmen were such a contrast. The crowds for each night were like night and day. I’m so glad I decided to go to both shows because they were each well worth it. It also just makes me thankful to live where I do, to have the opportunities that I have, and it reminded me to always try and live each moment to the fucking brightest and fullest possible.

Wednesday: We had a lot of fun. There were some crazed HHH fans behind us going nuts but for the most part the crowd was not all that rocking. More about enjoying the tunes. Singing along. Dancing. It was very enjoyable and seeing HHH for the first time, I was very impressed. They sounded great and had so much energy. They really know how to engage the audience. The Walkmen went on last but unlike HHH, lead singer Hamilton does not know how to engage the audience like Steve from HHH. It was a let down. I really enjoyed the music but not the performance so much.

Last night: CRAZIEST crowd EVER! The opening band Detachment Kit got things started off. Very goth punk. The lead singer wore a velvety tuxedo with a cape for goodness sakes! He made all of us nervous when he climbed the lighting rig at one point and went up way too high. Rowdy crowd screaming to jump didn’t help. They definitely got some in the crowd whipped up. I knew then that this was going to be a much better crowd than the previous night and would be definitely wild. The Walkmen came on next and were more impressive than the first night. I want to put Matt, the drummer, in my pocket.

And then HHH came out. I figured people would be into it but not like this… the whole floor of the Troubadour was pretty much one big mosh pit. It was CRAZY. And wonderful all at the same time. People were stage diving and dancing and going nuts. Security didn’t care and let folks do whatever they wanted including jumping on the stage to then jump off, climbing the lighting rigs, and more. I was luckily in a good spot where I didn’t get pushed around at all so I was able to remain up front but not get hurt. Eventually people started getting more and more bold and by the last song, Bandages, it was all out insanity. Ended up half the crowd made it up on stage and joined the band, who just went with it the whole time, in the chaos, still managing to play their instruments. I took almost as many photos of the crowd then I did of the band. It was incredible. I know they filmed both nights. I wonder where that footage will end up but I know it must be amazing.

Before hand I had talked to this high school boy wearing a Hives t-shirt. He was very excited to see HHH. When he made it up on stage, he took over Dustin’s mike and completely sang the heck out of Bandages. It was rad. He looks like such a rock star in the photos I took. As Eddie told him later, he is our new favorite member of Hot Hot Heat. I need to post the photos so you can see how awesome last night was. It was truly indescribable. And I’m so thankful I was a witness to it all.
