People rushed back and forth, frantically setting up the stage for the performance. Fans cheered outside in the stadium, pumping adrenaline through the guys’ veins. “Are you ready?” The manager whispered, urging them towards the stage. There were a couple of nods, hiding the shaking boy in the back. “Let’s do this. Show them what we’re all about.”
Eleven boys exited the backstage area, patting each other on the back for good luck. Kyuhyun crossed his arms and leaned against the wall, jealousy running inside of him.
“This isn’t fair,” he said, teeth gritted. “Why can’t I be on stage performing with them?” Henry, who came as a special appearance, patted him on the back about to say something, when Eunhyuk ran over.
“Am I late? Have they already started?” Kyuhyun scowled.
“No, they’re out there probably waiting for you. Go, aren’t you supposed to be in the front?”
“Right, right…” Eunhyuk jumped up and down, loosening his muscles. He caught a glimpse of Kyuhyun and stopped. “Hey, dude, cheer up.”
“How can I cheer up? You guys are performing without me on my first comeback!”
“Not the whole time. I’ll see you on stage, okay?” Eunhyuk slapped him in the arm, not noticing Kyuhyun wince, and smiled before jogging out of the area. Kyuhyun eased up as the lights dimmed and the music began to play.
On the stage area, Eunhyuk got into his position and gripped his microphone, counting the beats before leading the dance to the five people behind him.
Then, all at once, the twelve joined together in the middle and began a dance routine. The speakers blew up, yelling, “Come on!” as Siwon led the stage in the middle. “Let’s… Yeah~”
Eunhyuk popped in the front, shining in all his red haired glory, before dropping to the floor as Donghae began to sing the first few verses. “If this is the end, there’s not another chance….”
His lyrics poured out as Kyuhyun stood in the back, still pissed. “God, Henry, this stupid accident is ruining everything for me.” Henry patted his shoulder.
“At least you’re still alive.”
“It’s pointless if I’m alive and not able to perform.”
“Be patient, will you? Give or take another minute and you’ll be out there again.” Kyuhyun sighed and bent his head back, resting it against the wall until he was finally given his cue. Henry followed him out with his violin, standing in the back and waiting for Eunhyuk and Kibum to come up and perform their raps before stepping in sync behind Siwon.
The older stepped away from the stage, and as soon as the fans’ eyes met with Kyuhyun, they erupted in cheers. Kyuhyun had to force himself to keep in his smile as he sang. “It’s not for them but for the children of our future…” Instead of his usual thoughts of, What the hell am I singing?, he secretly smiled as he went to the back of the group while Henry began his solo.
“That was good, Kyuhyun,” Donghae said, reaching out to pat him from the left. Kyuhyun smiled.
“Yeah, I thought so too.” Eunhyuk kicked Kyuhyun out from the back, earning a groan from the maknae.
A couple of seconds passed before he groaned again. “Aw, my stomach…” he mumbled, clutching his abdomen. Eunhyuk looked behind him for a mere millisecond before turning back to his position.
“Are you okay?” he whispered. “Kyuhyun?”
“It hurts…” Another groan. Eunhyuk, about to turn up, was suddenly pushed up by Donghae to begin their duet dance. In the middle of the moves, the dancer looked back for a second to see Kyuhyun hobble off the stage. His heart pounded, and he wasn’t sure whether it was because of the fans, or the maknae.
When Kyuhyun got to the backstage area, he didn’t complain anymore. Instead, he sat in the corner of their dressing room, crouched in a ball lying on the couch. He didn’t get back up to join the guys when the performance ended, he didn’t sing along while the others performed, he didn’t notice when none of the guys come back, he didn’t celebrate when they won that night. He didn’t do anything except sit there.
Towards the end of the show, the door burst open and cheers filled the dressing room. “WE WON!”
Kangin hopped up on top of a chair and popped open a bottle a shaken bottle of champagne, laughing as they all celebrated.
“Wait… Where’s Kyu?” There was a pause in the partying, interrupted by a moan and,
“Right here.” They all looked towards the voice, surprised at the sight. Kyuhyun’s blonde hair was messed up and sticking out in random directions, and his hand was stuck permanently to his stomach. “I feel horrible…”
Eunhyuk rushed to him first, followed by Sungmin with a stuffed animal, and Ryeowook with a bunch of flowers in his hand. Eunhyuk lay a hand on Kyuhyun’s head. Heechul slapped it away.
“What do you think he has, a fever?” Kyuhyun managed to chuckle weakly.
“Hey, he’s trying to help.”
“Can you sit up?” Yesung held out a hand, which Kyuhyun took and used to pull himself up.
“It’s nothing big. I think I just ‘overworked’ since I haven’t been onstage for a while.” Towards the door, Siwon came inside holding a large jug of water and a Bible. Heechul groaned.
“Not with that again, Siwon…”
“I was just - hey! What’s wrong with Kyuhyun?”
“He’s feeling a little sick,” Leeteuk said, urging the manager that no, they did not need to call the hospital. Hankyung sat next to Kyuhyun and rubbed his back. Eunhyuk took the arm rest on the other side of Kyuhyun.
“Man… Well, this sucks. I was planning on doing a little more than one line.”
“You did good for your first comeback, especially after the accident. Don’t worry.” Shindong smiled a bright smile, lighting up the room. “I think we should still celebrate, if you’re up to it, Kyuhyun-ah.” Kyuhyun nodded.
“With whatever I can, sure thing.” He grinned and grabbed Eunhyuk’s hand, pulling both of them up. “So, wanna teach me the dance?” He laughed and walked to the stereo in the room, turning it up so Don’t Don was blasting through the speakers. “Let’s see it.” Eunhyuk smiled, pulling Kyuhyun next to him and beginning the dance.
“I guess he’s better,” Kibum said, laughing as his rap came up.
~
“We’re here with all thirteen of the Super Junior members, for the first time. Heechul, care to introduce to maknae?” Heechul stood up, walking around casually and looking the members straight in the eyes. Kyuhyun sat next to Eunhyuk, leaning against the dancer’s shoulder and examining his nails.
Behind them, the MC of EHB watched expectantly at Kyuhyun.
A slap to his own shoulder brought him back to reality. “This,” Heechul said, “is Cho Kyuhyun, newest member of Super Junior. Welcome, Kyuhyun-ah.”
“Huh?” Kyuhyun glanced up, saw they were on camera, and fumbled. “Oh, um, hi, I’m Kyuhyun. Please treat me well.” He bowed to the camera, Eunhyuk pulling him down.
“Before you hurt yourself,” he warned. Kyuhyun cracked a smile, not realizing Eunhyuk was serious.
They went through the show normally, until it was time to go to the top stage and show how flexible they really were. One by one the members went, until Hankyung nudged Kyuhyun up on the stage, smiling. “Let’s see you do it.” Eunhyuk glared at him.
“Leave him alone, Hankyung. Can’t you see that he still hasn’t fully-”
“Sure.” Kyuhyun stood up. “Hey, Heechul-ah, when’s my turn?” Heechul turned to him, shocked.
“You want to go, too?”
“Yeah. It’s my first episode, why not?” He walked over to the stage, Sungmin and Ryeowook helping him up. Eunhyuk stayed back next to Donghae, watching him go. Kyuhyun grabbed the hands, shivering at the cold plastic, and slowly bent forward as Shindong maneuvered the handle.
They cheered for him to keep going when a sudden pain whipped through his back. “Ah, ah, stop,” he said, standing up slowly and holding his back.
“Ooh! 8 centimeters above ground level!” They clapped, interrupted by Kangin.
“Hey! Did I really do worse than Kyuhyun?” All of them laughed, including Kyuhyun as he stepped down from the stage. Immediately, Eunhyuk rushed to his side.
“What were you thinking, doing that? You could’ve been injured!” Kyuhyun waved him off, still stretching his back.
“I’m already injured, so it doesn’t matter,” he protested. Hankyung laughed, slapping Eunhyuk on the back.
“Yeah, dude, ease up. He did good. Now it’s my turn.” He grinned, rubbing his hands together and hopping up on the stage with ease. Kyuhyun sighed.
“Ah… I can’t wait till I can do that again. For now, I’m stuck like this.” He patted his sides. Eunhyuk frowned and moved Kyuhyun’s arms away from his hips.
“Don’t worry about that right now. Just stop doing crazy stuff like that.” Kyuhyun rolled his eyes, but linked his arm with Eunhyuk.
“Sure, sure, whatever you want.”
~
“And, we’re done for the day! Good job, boys. We’ve finally finished.”
“Wait, can’t we see the music video?” Eunhyuk walked up to the director, pulling Kyuhyun with him. “We want to see how we did.” Kyuhyun struggled with the dancer’s grip on him, pushing ahead and running to the monitor.
Super Junior had spent the whole day filming the MV for their new comeback with Sorry, Sorry.
“How do you turn this… Oops.” A red light began flashing on the screen, startling the maknae, who backed up and hid his hands behind his back. “That wasn’t me.” Eunhyuk laughed and stepped in front.
“What did you do? Aren’t you supposed to be an expert with computers?”
“I’m an expert with video games and game consoles, not this,” Kyuhyun scoffed. Eunhyuk grinned.
“I think you totally screwed this up.”
“It wasn’t me!”
“Sure…” The director of the music video took the computer from Eunhyuk, pressing a couple of buttons and revealing the music video.
“Do you want to see it or not?”
“Yes!” Kyuhyun rushed back to the front and stood next to Eunhyuk, who yelled for the rest of the guys. They gathered around the screen, and Eunhyuk pressed play.
The scene started off with a girl, faded into black, before all thirteen guys were shown. Kyuhyun frowned. “Why am I all the way in the corner?” Eunhyuk smacked him, indicating him to be quiet. The maknae zipped his lips and threw away the key.
He laughed again when Yesung appeared on the screen. “Look at you; you’re so short.” Another smack followed. “Sorry, sorry…” He laughed at his play-on words. Eunhyuk paused the video.
“Will you please shut up?” Kyuhyun nodded.
Towards the end of the song, he hummed as his last note came on. Eunhyuk pinched his ear, bringing him down to the floor, until the full music video was done. “Okay, okay, it’s done! Let me go now!” Eunhyuk laughed, letting go and pulling him up. Kyuhyun rubbed at his now-red ear, pouting. “Well, that hurt.”
“Good.” The rest of the guys spread out, chattering over what they approved and disapproved of, while Kyuhyun down on the floor with Eunhyuk.
“So, what’d you think of me?”
“Of you?”
“Yeah. I look pretty amazing, don’t I?” Eunhyuk nodded.
“You did really good. It’s like you were never injured.” He laughed and bumped Kyuhyun in the shoulder, who ignored it.
“People will finally see what I can do.” Eunhyuk glanced at him strangely.
“What do you mean? People already know what you can do.”
Kyuhyun shook his head while playing with the ends of his hair. “They know I can sing, but that’s it. I wasn’t around long enough to show them I can do more. Nobody even knew me during U, and I didn’t dance during Don’t Don. I’ll show them, though.”
Eunhyuk leaned back until he was resting on the cold floor. “Who cares about what they think of you. As long as you’re okay with it.”
Kyuhyun leaned back to join him. “I’ll be okay with it when all of them see what I can do. I’m not just a singer, you know?”
“Yeah, I do know.” Kyuhyun nudged Eunhyuk with his leg nearest to the dancer.
“Lie. You’re the best at about everything.”
“So?”
“So, I’ll show them I can dance too.” Eunhyuk snorted. “What? You don’t think I can?”
“No, that’s not it. Just… Who are you trying to impress, now? Me or the fans?” Kyuhyun grinned, sitting up and looking back at Eunhyuk.
“Who do you think?” With that being said, he left, leaving Eunhyuk surprised and completely confused.
~
Eunhyuk sat in the hospital room, toying with his phone before he decided to make the call. The television blasted the theme to the Evergreen Concert, which was airing live. He turned down the volume as the ringtone to Sorry, Sorry filled the room.
“Hello?” a breathless Kyuhyun answered, gasping. Eunhyuk stifled a laugh.
“Hey?” He paused. “Are you okay?” There were a couple of deep breaths before a crackling sound filled the speaker.
“Yeah,” he panted. “Why do you ask?”
“Why do you sound so tired?”
“I ran to the dressing room because I was expecting you to call. And then you did.” Eunhyuk blinked, pulling the phone away from his ear to stare at it.
“You were… Expecting me to call?”
“Well, yeah. After all, I’m doing your solo, aren’t I?”
“Hm… That’s right. Are you prepared?” Kyuhyun scoffed on the other line, yelled something at an impatient Hankyung.
“Of course. Why shouldn’t I be?”
“Well, you’re Kyuhyun.” Eunhyuk smirked. “Didn’t you say people didn’t think you could dance?”
“Not people! Just, one person.”
“Really? Who is that?”
A cough. “None of your business.”
“Does that person happen to be a good dancer?”
“I said, none of your business!”
“Can he rap too?”
“Why do you care?”
“Hm… Is he, perhaps, Lee Hyukjae, of Super Junior?”
“Shut up, Eunhyuk!”
“So, I’m right?”
“I’m hanging up.”
“Wait, wait, I’m just kidding!” But the dial tone had already ended. “Well, you suck.” Eunhyuk sighed and dropped the phone on the bedside table, turning the volume back up to the concert as the announcer introduced Super Junior.
“Please welcome, the biggest boy band in the world… Super - JUNIOR!” The crowd exploded in cheers as the intro to Sorry, Sorry began and the guys took their place on the stage.
The song went normally, all twelve of them easily making up for Eunhyuk being gone.
The song then speeded up its pace as Kyuhyun was thrown in the middle to begin his complicated dance solo. Behind him, Yesung laughed, and Eunhyuk had to resist doing so himself. Kyuhyun, with that smirk on his face that Eunhyuk just wanted to wipe off, turned towards the rest of the guys. Next to him, Donghae smiled; you did good, maknae.
Eunhyuk couldn’t help but agree himself.
~
Four pictures dropped onto the table that the members surrounded. “And these will be our dancers.”
“WHAT?!” Eunhyuk screeched, whipping his arm out to grab the photos, crumpling them in the process. “Me, Shindong, Donghae, and… KYUHYUN?” Kyuhyun smirked.
“Why? Do you have a problem with that?”
“Well, yes - I mean, no, but - I do, but you can’t just - what?!” Kyuhyun laughed, slapping Eunhyuk on the back and leaving his hand resting against the dancer’s neck. Eunhyuk shivered, from the touch or the pain, he didn’t know.
“I think it’ll be fun,” Donghae encouraged, looking up at Shindong for confirmation.
“Yeah, me too. Besides, his dancing has improved a lot.” Eunhyuk glared at the two, shrugging Kyuhyun off of him.
“Will you guys please excuse me and Kyuhyun? I’ve got a few words to say to him.”
They left the room murmuring, watching Eunhyuk glower at Kyuhyun. When they were gone, he slammed the door shut and turned back to the maknae. “Was this on purpose?” Kyuhyun raised an eyebrow; what? “Did you ask the manager to put you as one of the dancers?” He shook his head. “Then why have you suddenly been chosen?” He shrugged. “Are you not good enough, with your singing and acting and charm that you have to go and parade into my forte too? What’s next, you gonna become rapper Kyu or something?”
“For one, I don’t know how to rap, and two, it wasn’t even my decision, so I don’t know why you’re blowing up at me.”
Eunhyuk sputtered, stumbling over his words. “Me? Blowing up at you? Is this what you call blowing up?”
“Well, yeah.” Eunhyuk grabbed him by the collar, pushing him up against the wall.
“Do you want to see real blowing up, Kyuhyun-ah?” The younger boy just rolled his eyes, pulling Eunhyuk off of him.
“Please, Hyukjae, stop being so dramatic.” He brushed off imaginary dust from his shoulders. “I think you’re jealous,” he said.
“Jealous? Of you?” Eunhyuk scoffed. “Never.”
“Then explain why you’re so worked up over me dancing in the music video.”
“B - because you aren’t even any good!” Kyuhyun turned around to look at the older boy. Eunhyuk stepped towards him, sizing him up. “Yeah, I said it. You can’t dance. What do you think about that?”
Kyuhyun took a step back in disbelief. “I think that’s kind of mean.” He turned back to the door and reached out to grab the handle. “I’ll just ask the manager to take me out of the dance and put in Sungmin instead.”
Eunhyuk swallowed, realizing the harshness of his words. “Wait, Kyuhyun!” The handle turned. “Don’t leave!” He took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean what I said. You can dance, I’m just… Yeah, you’re right. I am jealous.” Kyuhyun let go of the handle, but stayed with his back to him. Eunhyuk dropped on to the chair, running a hand through his already messy hair. “You’re already an amazing singer, and all of the people love you. Dancing is the only thing I have in this career.”
It took a couple of minutes before Kyuhyun interrupted their awkward silence. “You could’ve just said that in the first place.”
“Yeah, I could’ve.” Kyuhyun snorted and went back to Eunhyuk, pulling him in a strangely comforting hug.
“Don’t worry; I’ll probably never be better than you. As long as I’m second best is good enough.”
“Yeah… Okay. That’s cool.” There was a knock on the door, interrupting their moment.
“Hey, we’re about to start shooting. Ready?” Kyuhyun broke apart from Eunhyuk, rubbing his neck.
“Um… Yeah. We’re coming.” Eunhyuk forced a laugh, sticking his hands in his back pockets.
“Be there in a sec.” The person left, leaving the two alone again. Eunhyuk blinked up to see Kyuhyun looking at him, and turned away. “So I guess we should leave?” Kyuhyun nodded and walked to the door slowly. Eunhyuk followed after him.
“Hey, you’ll help me when we’re dancing, right?”
“What? You need help?”
“Shut up.” Kyuhyun shoved Eunhyuk, leaving the room in a huff. Eunhyuk laughed.
~
“So, how do your hyungs treat you?” Kyuhyun scoffed.
“How do they treat me? Like hell, that’s how.” Eunhyuk choked on his water.
“What?” Kyuhyun ignored him.
“When I first joined them, they were tough. These guys aren’t accepting. I remember once, I was cooking ramen noodles, and I put in too much oil. Leeteuk hyung comes up, has a taste, and yells, ‘Who made this?!’ He didn’t let me cook again, he was so mad.”
Leeteuk blushed, hiding his face with the cards in his hand. “How about now? Do they still treat you like that?”
“No, no, they’re nice to me now. I ask them, ‘Can I please borrow a shirt?’ or, ‘Hyung, will you make some food for me?’ and they always do it.” Next to him, Eunhyuk laughed.
“My God… This kid…” He leaned his head against one hand, the other pointing to Kyuhyun on his left. “You ask like that, don’t you?” Eunhyuk turned towards the MC’s. “He doesn’t say please, or thank you, or hyung. When he asks for something, he says, ‘Yah, give me that shirt,’ or, ‘Hey, make me some food’. In no way does he act politely.”
Kyuhyun covered his mouth in mock offense. “What are you talking about?”
“You know exactly what I’m talking about, little boy. Out of all the groups in South Korea, Kyuhyun has to be the rudest maknae out of all of them.”
Kyuhyun smirked, not denying it.
The rest of the show, he played along normally, going along with his usual antics, until the camera stop recording and they went for a break. Everyone left except Eunhyuk and Kyuhyun, either to eat or terrorize someone. “That was fun,” Eunhyuk said, twirling the straw in his drink absently.
“Did you really mean that?”
Eunhyuk looked up, startled by the sudden question. “What?”
“Did you really mean it when you said I was the rudest maknae?” The dancer laughed.
“Of course. You are, aren’t you?”
“I guess.” Kyuhyun looked away, staring at the wall on the other side of him.
“Oh, come on, Kyuhyun, you can’t deny it.” There was no response. “Don’t be mad, dude. It’s not a bad thing. It’s kind of funny.” He didn’t say anything in return. Eunhyuk tugged at his arm. “Hey, Kyu, look over here.” Kyuhyun shuffled, tilting his head slightly towards Eunhyuk. “You’re not mad, right?” He shook his head. “Sorry if I hurt your feelings.”
“You didn’t hurt anyone’s feelings,” Kyuhyun replied, shrugging Eunhyuk off and turning to face him fully.
“Are you sure?” He nodded, propping his feet up on Eunhyuk’s legs.
“Besides, it’s totally true. Now let’s go bother people.” He dropped his feet just as quickly and grabbed Eunhyuk’s hands, unconsciously locking fingers with him as they ran off.
Was it just him, or did the day suddenly get a lot better?
~
“Hey, I didn’t know you wrote this song.” Kyuhyun threw down a couple of sheets of paper on Eunhyuk’s bed, where he sat strumming Sungmin’s guitar that he’d stolen.
“This?” He picked up the papers, shuffling through them. “Ooh, this… Yeah, I did. But Donghae was the one who composed it.”
“I know that. But I didn’t know you wrote it.”
“Well… I did.”
“It’s good. Where’d you come up with it?” He took the sheets back from Eunhyuk, humming. They were the lyrics to A Short Journey.
“I don’t know. It just… Popped up, one day, that maybe I should write a song.”
“Is this based on personal experience? The door opens and I take one step, and the tip of my nose feels your breath? Where’s that from?” Eunhyuk blushed, pulling the hat on his head lower.
“Nowhere.”
“Come on, tell me! This sounds kind of familiar, anyways. Like, remember that day when I came home from a recording with Yesung and it was snowing really hard and it was you that opened the-”
“Shut up, Kyuhyun, that wasn’t it. It’s obviously for the fans because of Kangin’s leave. Stop making up fantasies.”
“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me…”
“I’m not!”
“Seriously? That song wasn’t because of…” He stopped talking, looking at Eunhyuk, who looked extremely red.
“No, it wasn’t. Well, not really, but maybe a little, you just happened to walk in while I was - oh, God… I really suck at lying.”
Kyuhyun laughed. “Yeah, you do. And now that you’ve finally admitted it, want to get lunch with me?”
“What?”
“Stop being retarded and let’s go have lunch. The rest of the members won’t notice we’re gone.” He smiled, taking Eunhyuk’s hand and pulling him up. “And get that stupid hat off of your head; I can’t see your face.”
“Sheesh, someone’s a little pushy.”
“And someone’s a little shy. Come on, girly, let’s go.” Eunhyuk didn’t even bother to argue, just tightening his grip on Kyuhyun’s hand as they left.
~
If there was one thing Eunhyuk sucked at, it had to be Chinese. “What the hell does this even mean?!” he yelled, throwing the music sheets in his hand to the floor. Kyuhyun, who was also working on memorizing the lyrics, walked over.
“Hey, chill with that, we only have these two copies. What do you need help with?”
“The whole damn thing! I don’t understand any of it!” Kyuhyun rolled his eyes.
“Let’s see… Okay, here’s your part. Repeat after me: yong li ai hui sui.”
“Yong li ai hui sui.”
“Wo sui zhe jin huo tui.”
“Wo sui zhe jin huo ti.”
“Okay, that’s it.”
“That’s it?”
“I know you’ve got the rap down, so yeah. That’s it.”
“And I don’t need to know what it means?” Kyuhyun shook his head, throwing the papers back at him.
“Just remember that after Henry sings, you go, then he sings again, and then you. Same goes for Sungmin. Got it?” Eunhyuk nodded. “And once you’re done with that, I need a little help on the dance. I just can’t seem to be getting one of the moves down.”
Eunhyuk looked up at him, noticing the lust in Kyuhyun’s eyes. “Um, Kyuhyun…?”
“Just meet me in my room later. I’ll have the music on.” He smirked, leaving Eunhyuk on the floor with the lyrics to Too Perfect, a confused expression, and extremely tight pants.
