Heather hadn't woken up at the crack of dawn on Christmas morning and gone running downstairs in a fit of excitement in a very, very long time. And to be honest, she hadn't expected to on this one, either.

So what was it, exactly, that had made her wake up at that early hour and lean up out of bed to look out the window?

Maybe it was chance, or maybe it was some great cosmic being taking pity on her for once-- she didn't know.

But the sight that met her eyes banished all thoughts of going back to sleep immediately.

A tall blue snakelike body, just visible between the buildings on the edge of the city.

She recognized it.

Her sleepy Pokemon were shoved unceremoniously to the side of the bed as she scrambled out of bed. Jeans were yanked on one-handedly while she yanked her coat on over her tank top. Didn't even bother zipping it before she ran out the door.

Elevator? Too long a wait.

Down the stairs she went.

Around ten minutes later?

The returning travelers would hear a voice yelling "HAL! LIQUID!" and spot a certain bedraggled-looking tomboy sprinting towards them through the snow, coat flapping behind her and arm waving wildly above her head.

... Barefoot.

Liquid certainly spotted that disheveled little blond girl running through the streets barefoot. There was only one person in the world who would run out into the snow without shoes on a day like this to flag them down.

Liquid was able to conceal the smile that threatened to spread across his face, but he'd be damned if Heather wasn't a sight for sore eyes.

"Button up your coat!"

He would have waved back, but, you know, there was the whole broken arm thing.

Though he was thrilled to see Heather, his first words weren't exactly a greeting.

"P-put on some shoes!"

Priorities. Otacon has them.

If she heard EITHER precautionary tell-off, she didn't acknowledge it.

Although both warnings were very sound advice.

She had a high-stepping gait as she ran-- she wasn't exactly immune to the cold like Liquid was.

Needless to say, she reached them in record time and the first thing she did was all-out TACKLE the nerd in a hug-- and probably wind up HOLDING HIM OFF THE GROUND if he fell over from the impact.

Also, watch out Liquid, you're next.

Liquid sort of... stepped to the side as Otacon got tackled, as though trying to put himself out of tackling range in case he was next. The last thing he needed was to be thrown to the ground and land on all of his bruises.

Nice tackle, though.

"Ghk--!"

The next thing Otacon knew, he was being held in the air and crushed by a teenage girl.

Which was...a strange predicament.

"A...air, please...?" he choked out, obviously stunned by the impact and the CRUSHING POWER of Heather's arms.

She was interested in hugging her friend, not crushing him, so no worries, Otacon. You won't die.

She released him after a second or two before turning her attention to Liquid-- oh hell no, he wasn't getting out of this. ... Or he wasn't, until she saw his bruises and broken arm.

"-- ... I guess yours can wait."

"Good."

Hugging a man who was one giant bruise with a broken arm was probably not a good life decision. At least, not if you didn't want to get tossed or possibly punted.

"What the hell are you doing out here without shoes?"

"Y-yeah, geez...you could have at least put shoes on." Otacon remarked, a clearly worried look on his face.

"C'mon, let's get back inside before you lose a foot or something."

A pause.

"...And then help me drag Liquid to the hospital."

Now that she was no longer running, she was starting to dance a little bit from foot to foot. It was c-c-c-ooold.

"I was in a hurry."

And then she took the time to frown deeply at that broken arm.

"... You haven't been to a Center yet? ... I guess you DID fight, huh..."

"Of course I fought him. And I don't need to go to the Center, I'm perfectly fine."

He just had a little bit of a broken arm, nothing to be worried about.

"Well, you know him." Otacon replied, almost completely ignoring Liquid.

"So I might need you to help me 'convince' him, ya know?"

Heather was busy looking Liquid up and down-- seeing him wounded worried her, but... he WAS alive. He'd presumably been traveling. That meant that whatever might be wrong with him, he was probably okay.

... But still. Pokemon Center.

"I'll convince him."

Squaring her (very, very pale by this point) feet in the snow, she looked up at Liquid, jaw set.

"Get your ass to the Pokemon Center or I will kick it and I don't wanna have to do that on Christmas Day."

Liquid could take a hell of a lot of damage before it started to be a real problem for him. A broken arm was practically nothing compared to the kind of injuries that he could bear.

He looked at her for a moment, then down at her very pale feet, then grabbed her by the collar and threw her over his good shoulder one-handed.

"The only place you're going is back to the damn hotel."

Otacon couldn't help but laugh at that.

And oh, laugh he did. Laugh he did indeed.

"Pffffhahaha--relax, Heather, you can at least put some shoes on first."

... Man, when even a guy who was beat up as all hell and had one broken arm could pick you up and sling you over his shoulder, that was just kind of sad. Heather let out a startled yelp as she was yoinked off the ground.

"HEY!"

She didn't struggle too much, because... well hey, she was off the ground now and that meant less chance of getting frostbite, but she did take the opportunity to give Liquid a fairly vicious pound on the back with her fist. NRGH TAKE THAT.

"I'd go back to the hotel if I didn't know that you wouldn't go to the Center if someone didn't MAKE you!"
