Liquid needed to get out of Azalea.
It wasn't because of anything that he did for once-- it was because of what he'd heard from Kay Faraday about some woman getting kidnapped. It wasn't even the fact that she was kidnapped that made him so determined to get to Goldenrod as soon as possible; if a crime had occurred, it was a job for the police. That was what they were there for, after all.
It was hearing what had happened before when this person had kidnapped someone that fueled Liquid's urgency. He didn't know Kay Faraday very well, but he could not suffer a man who tortured girls to wander free and do it again. Rescuing this woman now took a much higher priority than it usually would have; he had already gotten his things pack in preparation to leave. There was only one thing he had left to do: fight the gym leader of this town and get himself a badge.
Normally, Liquid would have barged into the gym like he owned the place and demanded a battle with pomp and flamboyant gestures abundant, but today there was none of that. He walked in, Huan padding beside him, his steps no less resolute for the fact that they were not dramatic, and approached Bugsy. He ignored all other trainers in the gym. He issued a challenge, and it was accepted.
The gym floor was cleared, Liquid on one end and Bugsy on the other.
Liquid gave Huan a few rough pats. "Let's make this quick."
The Houndoom trotted out onto the floor, hackled raised. Bugy released his first Pokemon, a Heracross.
The battle started.
"Huan, fire fang."
Liquid's orders were delivered with military precision; his voice was always strong and level no matter what was thrown at him. When a slash from Bugsy's Scizor injured Huan to the point that the Houndoom couldn't get back up, there was no change in Liquid's voice; his devil-mutt had done well by taking out one of the gym leader's Pokemon; two, considering that in a moment the Scizor's burn from Huan's Fire Fang attack was going to knock it out of the game.
The Scizor hit the deck as he withdrew Huan.
Liquid had done his homework before getting into the battle; he'd known that Huan would be his primary attacker, considering Bug Pokemon's weakness to fire. But Jormungandr was part flying type, which had the advantage over bugs as well; against Bugsy's Pinsir, his last remaining Pokemon, was Liquid's Gyarados.
"Jormungandr. Finish this up."
The next few minutes involved one very unfortunate Pinsir battered and beaten by five hundred pounds of angry Gyarados. It was all over when Jormungandr struck the unfortunate Pokemon with his tail, sending it flying into the far wall on the other side of the gym. It wasn't getting back up.
When he walked out, it was with a shiny new Hive badge in hand.
