Please give us a personal history of your character's life and explain to us in detail how they grow and develop over the course of their canon:
Days after Goku was born on planet Vegeta, he was put on a spaceship and routed to Earth in order to expunge the native inhabitants. His race, the Saiyans, was bred for warfare since birth. Because of this, the Saiyans were enlisted into working for a powerful tyrant named Frieza and his Planet Trade Organization, which basically flipped planets and resold them to customers. Goku was given the Earth as his first mission, since humans were easy enough for a low-level Saiyan to destroy.
When he crash landed on Earth, an elderly man named Gohan found him and took care of him. He was very unruly and destructive, but an accidental fall on his head changed his attitude. He forgot his mission to destroy and grew up to be a very carefree boy. On the night of a full moon before Goku had reached the age of twelve, he caught sight of the sky and transformed into a giant monkey, killing Gohan accidentally. Because these transformations leave the Saiyan mindless, Goku woke up the next day without memory of the night before and assumed Gohan had been mauled by a giant beast. Since then, he has lived in the wilderness, isolated from all other contact with humans.
One day, however, while he was bringing back breakfast, Goku is hit by a car. Having never seen a modern vehicle or a woman before, Goku threatens the girl inside. Bulma convinces Goku that she is human just like him, only female, and in search of the dragon balls, which when gathered together granted the collector a wish. She tracked one of the dragon balls down to Goku’s house with a specially designed radar device and barters with him so that she can borrow it since it is the only possession of his deceased grandfather he has left. He agrees to travel with her to find the rest of them, using Goku as her meat shield along their journey.
The next morning, Goku and Bulma find a lost sea turtle searching for the ocean. Bulma points in the right direction, but is unwilling to help the turtle any further without a reward. Goku, however, readily agrees to carry the turtle to the ocean, and the two of them split up. Inevitably, Bulma runs into trouble and decides it is probably best to stick with Goku regardless of the detour. Thankfully Goku’s work pays off; once they return the turtle to the ocean, the caretaker of the turtle is summoned. He is an old man named Master Roshi (or Kame-sennin), a world famous martial artist teacher. As a reward, Master Roshi gives Goku the kintoun, a magical cloud that those with a pure heart may ride it, and Bulma receives a dragon ball that the old man had dredged up from the sea years ago.
Following the radar to the next dragon ball, Goku and Bulma come to a seemingly deserted village, though Goku’s keen senses say otherwise. Forcibly entering one of the houses, he wonders why everyone is hiding inside and is suddenly assaulted by one of the townsfolk. Bulma intervenes and explains their situation. The man apologized for attacking Goku, having assumed he was the terrible shape-shifting monster Oolong that threatens their village and steals young girls regularly. Bulma promises to have Goku defeat this Oolong and rescue the girls in exchange for the dragon ball they tracked to this remote village. Disguising Goku as a girl, they planned to have Oolong kidnap him and lead the way to his castle where the girls were held captive. Unfortunately, Goku has to go to the bathroom and blows his cover as a girl. Enraged, Oolong transforms into a giant bull and fights an eager Goku. Knowing that he ultimately cannot win against this superhuman boy, Oolong turns into a bat and flies away, and Goku follows along on his kintoun. He fights Oolong in the air and ultimately captures him. The townsfolk discover that the monstrous Oolong is nothing more than a little lecherous pig who used his transformations to scare villagers out of money and women. When they reach the castle, they find that all the girls are more than safe, they have been squandering Oolong’s money and he is more than thankful that the villagers take them away.
Oolong is then shanghaied into following Goku and Bulma since his powers of transformation may come in handy on their journey. Travelling by boat, they head toward Frypan Mountain, but eventually they run out of oil and must continue on foot through a desert. A local thief named Yamcha and his shape-shifting flying cat partner Puar spot them in the wilderness and decide to steal from them. Goku, of course, is happy to defend his friends against this new villainy, but after putting so much effort into fighting he grows exhausted from hunger. The only thing that saves them from Yamcha’s surprise raid is Bulma. Yamcha is irrationally afraid of women and retreats back to his lair when he sees her.
The Goku party is safe for now, but that night Yamcha and Puar come back and spy on them from outside their RV. They overhear Goku’s conversation with Oolong about the dragon balls and so Yamcha devises a plan to grab them without getting caught by Bulma. Puar transforms into Goku in order to lead the girl out of the cabin. However, unbeknownst to Puar and Yamcha, Oolong has drugged Goku and Bulma in order to molest her while she sleeps. When Puar!Goku walks into the RV, he surprises Oolong who then transforms into Bulma to hide his nefarious intentions. Puar!Goku drags Oolong!Bulma outside so that Yamcha can slip inside. Both shape-shifters eventually realize they have been tricked and Yamcha is traumatized by the experience inside their RV, completely forgetting to grab their dragon balls.
The next morning, Yamcha tries again to steal the dragon balls. Pulling up to their RV, the thief launches a bazooka at it and destroys their vehicle. Full from breakfast, Goku easily wins the fight between him and Yamcha, kicking out one of the young man’s teeth. Outraged by this abuse to his manly face, Yamcha leaves again, but comes up with a better plan. Instead of stealing the few dragon balls they have, he and Puar will wait until all seven are collected before he strikes again. However, with their RV destroyed, Yamcha must give them a way to proceed. As a “peace offering”, he gives Goku and the gang a quicker means of transportation before running off into their own vehicle to give chase.
Unaware of their plotting, Goku, Bulma, and Oolong continue to Frypan Mountain, which is covered in flames. They meet the owner of Frypan Mountain, a giant man named Gyumao (or the Ox King) who has been trapped outside his house because of all the flames. Gyumao is skeptical of Goku and the others because most travelers attempt to steal his treasure that is housed in his giant mansion, along with the sixth dragon ball. Gyumao learns that Goku is the adopted son of Gohan, his former rival when they trained under Master Roshi. He pleads with Goku to go find Master Roshi and borrow the bashousen, a legendary fan which can surely put out the flames on Frypan Mountain. He also asks if Goku can go find his daughter Chi Chi, whom he had sent off to find help days before. He finds her easily enough and carries her back to her father on his kintoun. She accidentally latches onto his tail and Goku momentarily grows weak and unstable. He explains to her that whenever someone pulls on his tail he loses power. Along the way, Goku is curious as to whether Chi Chi is a girl or a boy and so he pats her on the crotch with his foot. Chi Chi assumes that this action means he has fallen in love with her.
With Chi Chi found, Goku leaves for Master Roshi’s island. Unfortunately, the old man had accidentally thrown it out after he had used it as a placemat. Instead of a fan, Master Roshi returns to Frypan Mountain himself to take care of the fires. Using a special energy attack he developed called the kamehameha, he extinguishes the fire and unfortunately most of the house with it. Goku and the others must sift through the rubble in order to find the dragon ball. While Bulma goes off to track it down, Goku, fascinated by Master Roshi’s technique, experiments with it on a nearby car. On his first try, Goku is able to make a small energy wave and smash the car. Impressed by Goku’s innate power, the old man tells Goku that once he is finished collecting the dragon balls he will take Goku on as his next apprentice. Bulma finds the dragon ball shortly after and the small gang says good bye to Chi Chi and Gyumao for now. Just before departing, Chi Chi asks Goku if he will come back and marry her. Goku agrees, though he is not entirely sure what marriage is.
The final dragon ball takes them far west. Along the way, they are ambushed by a villain in a robotic suit who works for a man named Emperor Pilaf, searching for the dragon balls as well. Bulma’s bag of dragon balls is taken, their vehicle is destroyed, and Goku follows after, but because he can’t distinguish a real person from the robotic suit the man abandoned, the enemy gets away. Emperor Pilaf has the seventh dragon ball; however, Goku’s dragon ball from his grandfather stayed on his person and so Pilaf is unable to summon the dragon to grant his wish. Again, Yamcha must help them out and they share a car together despite Yamcha’s fear of women. Bulma leads the group to Pilaf’s castle with her radar. They enter the castle easily enough but then Goku springs an obvious trap, leading everyone into a small dungeon. Bulma is taken from the room and interrogated for the whereabouts of the last dragon ball, but she does not give in. They throw her back in with the others and simply gas everyone and then search all the bodies.
Goku wakes up to find his dragon ball is gone and they try to break out of the prison in order to stop Pilaf from making a wish. With nothing working to put a dent in the thick walls, Goku tries a kamehameha and makes a small hole in the wall, large enough for Puar and Oolong to escape from. Before Pilaf can finish his wish, Oolong interrupts and wishes for a pair of panties. The dragon grants it and afterward the dragon balls disperse across the world. The two shape-shifters are recaptured and Pilaf puts Goku and his friends into an iron-walled room with a glass ceiling. Once the sun rises, they will be baked alive. COINCIDENTALLY!!! There just happens to be a full moon out this night and Goku explains how he is not allowed to look at the full moon so said his grandfather. He explains that a monster comes out during a full moon, which is what killed Gohan. Unfortunately, it’s a bit hard to stop him from gazing at it and Goku transforms into a towering ape which bursts through the iron and glass of their prison and rampages across the castle. None of his friends can settle him down and so Yamcha, having been spying on him during their adventure to Frypan Mountain, remembers Goku’s weakness is his tail. He asks Puar to transform into a pair of scissors and cut off his tail. He immediately shrinks back into a boy and sleeps heavily until the next morning.
Goku wakes up to find his tail is gone, but is completely unfazed by this. Since the dragon balls take a full year before they are usable again, the group splits up and Yamcha and Bulma go back to the city together with Puar and Oolong. Goku flies off to visit Master Roshi and start his training.
Goku returns to Master Roshi’s island and the old man asks him to bring him a good-looking woman as a rite of passage in order for Goku to train under him. Unable to distinguish between a good-looking woman and, well, anything else human, he brings back a hefty woman from a gym that matched Roshi’s description of “energetic”. He tries again and brings back a mermaid. Before he can try a third time, he and Master Roshi are interrupted by another boy who has arrived by boat. He introduces himself to the old man as Krillin, a disciple of a temple far to the east, eagerly looking for training from Master Roshi. The old man refuses at first, but then Krillin gives him a collection of porn magazines to persuade him. He agrees to apprentice the two of them only if they can find him a good-looking woman. Using the kintoun as transportation, Krillin helps Goku to pick out a correct woman for Master Roshi. They find one girl named Lunch running from the police, rescue her, and take her back to their master’s island where she becomes something of a cook and maid for him and the boys.
Their training begins with assessments from Master Roshi. He tests the boys’ speed and strength, both of which Goku excels at despite how little training he has had, and Master Roshi shows them what immeasurable power they will be able to achieve after their training. He shows them the unconventional exercises they will be performing daily. They must carry milk in carts around the island to all its inhabitants, sow fields with their hands, study, swim, and dodge angry bees each day. Five months into their training, Master Roshi gave them permission to enter a world fighting tournament called Tenkaichi Budokai.
Although Master Roshi never teaches them any fighting techniques, their intensive training allows them to topple most competitors within the preliminary fights. Krillin and Goku are seeded into the tournament, as well as Master Roshi who has disguised himself as a martial artist named Jackie Chun. In order to encourage his disciples to continue their training, grow stronger, and not become lax, he is determined to keep them from winning the tournament. During one of his early fights, Goku’s tail suddenly grows back and returns to him his innate strength and power. Both Krillin and Goku make it to the semi-finals, but Krillin is defeated by Jackie Chun, so it is down to Goku and Jackie. It is one of the longest fights in the history of Tenkaichi Budokai. Goku provides a difficult challenge for Jackie who would rather not kill his pupil, only neutralize him. Ultimately, Jackie must use a powerful technique which captures Goku in a web of electricity which intensifies until the boy concedes. Being much too stubborn to lose, Goku suffers through the shock but is spared death when the day becomes night and CONVENIENTLY a full moon comes on out. He transforms into a giant ape again and begins to destroy the tournament grounds.
In order to save the spectators and Goku himself, Jackie destroys the moon and he reverts back to a boy. The match resumes and they both take a running jump toward each other. Jackie’s legs are much longer and so his kick lands hard across Goku’s face. They are both knocked down, but Jackie is the first to stand up and so he wins. Afterward, he runs off to dress back into his usual clothing as Master Roshi and congratulates both his disciples for a job well done. Krillin and Goku are excited to continue their training in order become the strongest martial artists in the world. Goku decides to train by himself as he searches for his grandfather’s dragon ball, while Krillin stays with Master Roshi a bit longer.
What point in time are you taking your character from when he/she appears at Landel's and why?:
I am taking Goku from early on in the Dragon ball series, specifically after the Tenkaichi Budokai tournament. I decided to take him from this time because he is very naïve about the world and I think it’ll be very interesting to explore someone’s reaction to typical modern conveniences that we take for granted.
Please give us a detailed description of your character's personality:
As a baby, Goku was unruly, aggressive, and wailed constantly. It is made explicit in one of the Dragon ball movies that Goku is very weak strength-wise, having only a power level of 1 when his father examines him, but he cries and screams with a powerful spirit. As such, much of Goku’s strength and determination throughout his life comes from his strong heart and spirit. Once he hit his head as a child, his personality radically changed and he developed amnesia, though he still retained his passion for a good fight. Goku sees fighting not as a way to boast his strength over the other contender, but as a way to improve his own skills. He does not enjoy fights that are easy to win, in fact there have been times when he has stopped a fight because he is no longer having fun and suggests that his opponent go train so he can come back for a better fight. He has also let villains escape, even if there escape means possible destruction of the earth later on, because he wants to train harder and face them again.
Now as a young boy of 13 he has become carefree, optimistic, and eternally child-like in innocence and naivety, as seen by the fact that he can ride the kintoun which only those of pure heart may and can continue to ride it until his death. His caretaker was just as weird as he, and Goku was taught martial arts from an early age, appalling vocabulary and manners too, witnessed by his dialogue when speaking to others. He is atrociously blunt without realizing it. For instance, when Krillin and Goku are training with Master Roshi, Krillin is refined enough to disguise Master Roshi’s time on the toilette as a simple absence. Once it clicks for Goku, he openly shouts that “Ohh, he’s takin’ a shit” and goes to retrieve him. Because he has been isolated from the rest of society for all his life, Goku understands nothing about what is proper and inappropriate within a functioning society. One of his worst habits is patting people in the crotch. Bulma is the only woman he has ever seen and so he is not quite sure how to distinguish men from women, and so he continually pats people in the crotch to figure out if they have a penis or not.
In this same vein of ignorance and naivety, Goku cannot distinguish right or wrong very well, nor can he quickly surmise if someone he meets is a potential threat or not. Several times throughout the series, Goku must ask Bulma whether those in their way are bad or not. One good example of this is when Bulma gets kidnapped by a giant pterodactyl and Goku asks if this monster is a friend of Bulma, to which the monster replies that he is. Goku then allows himself be tied up while he waits for the pterodactyl to return with Bulma. Many things, like this situation, have to be spelled out to Goku or he doesn’t get it because he can’t pick up on social context.
There are very few things that can make Goku frustrated or angry. He can brush almost anything off his shoulder. The best example of this is when he loses his tail after rampaging across Emperor Pilaf’s castle and wakes up to notice it is missing. After the immediate shock wears off he just says “Oh well” and goes on with his day. Cheating and the harm of his friends are the only things that get Goku’s blood boiling. He believes in all things fair, whether it’s a fight or a general interaction with others.
He is also an unconscious troll because of his straightforward speech and his lack of a filter. Many times while travelling with Bulma and the others, he constantly rubs them the wrong way or shoots them down because he simply states the truth or, well, his version of it. One night on their journey, Bulma speculates that Goku was abandoned by his family because he has a tail. Goku replies with the theory that Bulma must have been abandoned because she has a “butt” on her chest (not understanding what breasts are). Another time, when Krillin and Goku first meet, Goku tells him that his bald head reminds him of a pachinko ball (This is one of these contradictions. How can Goku know what pachinko is if he’s never been to a city? Ohh Toriyama =__=).
Please give us a physical description of your character:
It’s difficult to surmise exactly how tall Goku is as a child; he’s not quite four feet, but taller than three feet based on how high he comes up to the main villain Piccolo’s thigh, so he is roughly 3’5”. He’s squat with muscular, stubby arms and legs and a bit of a paunch. His black hair is gravity-defying and sticks out on either side of his head, much bushier on the right side. Since his hair is so bloody cartoony, his damned hair will be much tamer and without the crazy part he has in his hair. He will have just a wild mass of black hair. Goku’s eyes are wide and black, usually with a vacant expression on his face. Lastly, he has a round scar where his monkey tail used to be.
What kinds of otherwordly abilities does your character have, if any?:
Well, he is an alien. His species was basically bred for warfare, kind of like the Spartans. He has inherently heightened skills in all his senses (especially smell), physical strength, and endurance. He can easily survive being shot repeatedly, squashed, thrown, or really anything. Lastly, when he looks at a full moon and still retains his monkey tail, Goku will transform into a berserker giant monkey.
If present, how do you plan to tweak these powers to make your character appropriately hindered in the setting of Landel's?:
His over heightened senses will become humanly average, with the exception of his sharp nose. However, his sense of smell will not be as powerful in the daytime. In the series, Goku is able to track down a small stone in a jungle that Master Roshi had thrown only by the scent of the old man that was left on the rock. Realistically, it would be unfair if he could just track anyone by their scent, so during nightshift he will have difficulty pinpointing his target because of the sterilized environment or because of the wide variance of smells around the institute.
Rock scissors paper (or Jan Ken) is a martial art move that Goku invented. He starts off by throwing a punch which symbolizes rock. He then pokes the opponent in the eyes which symbolizes scissors, and lastly he pushes his opponent away with an open palm, resembling paper. If it doesn’t work the first time, Goku will switch around the sequence of these attacks, but still shout them out in the proper order. So he may say rock and instead throw scissors to surprise his opponent. Goku will be able to do this up to three times a night because it only disorients his opponent instead of crippling him or her.
Kamehameha is Goku’s trademark energy attack. He places the butt of his palms together and pulls his hands back behind him while saying ‘kamehameha’ before a giant blast of energy spits from his hands. Because it is so powerful, twice the power of his suppressed level in the institute, Goku can only use it once a night. Such a high amount of energy used leaves him hungry, sleepy, and afterward he is pretty much useless for the remainder of the night. Plus the technique takes a bit of time to execute so he will be a sitting duck for a few moments while he charges it up.
Does your character have any non-otherworldy abilities/training that surpass the norm?:
He can manipulate the chi in his body to make balls of energy that he can shoot from his hands, a skill any human can accomplish with training. He is very proficient in martial arts and his own technique called Mad Fist, which is similar to Drunken Fist except he runs around like a rabid dog.
Third-Person Sample:
“One….. two…… f…… uhhh…….?” Well, it didn’t matter. The gaggle of birds over his head was already gone. Still, Goku kept his head skyward, mouth agape as an invitation for any bug to come right on in, watching the clouds whiz by as he put-putted through the sky on his kintoun. The young boy’s mouth grew dry and he finally snapped it shut after a few loud smacks from his lips. Bulma’s dragon radar was held firmly in his squat hand, bleeping steadily as he grew closer to the pulsing energy that radiated from the dragon ball.
Curious to see where he was headed, Goku stuck his head over the side of his golden cloud and groaned. “A forest…?” This could take forever! Oh well. It was likely this next ball could be his grandpas since he had already found two so far. That only five left right? Small peanuts by this point! “H’okay, kintoun, let’s go!” He brought the nimbus spiraling down to the earth below, an unfettered laugh filling the quiet sky until he finally landed in a clearing not far from the forest. Extending his short arms out to the side for balance, he jumped off the kintoun and waved good bye as it flew away. “Lessee here…” Holding the radar in both hands like a giant antique watch, Goku clicked the button a few times to enlarge the area being surveyed. Unfortunately, he was too busy trying to decide which direction the map was pointing that he hadn’t sensed someone walking up behind him. It wasn’t until a shadow towered over him that the little boy turned around, his expression completely vacant.
“What’re you doin’ out here kid?!” The stranger was a large woman, dressed in a strange uniform with an automatic rifle resting on her shoulder.
“Hey, lady, have-”
“I’m a man!”
“Wha?”
“I’m a man!”
Puzzled, Goku gave her another once over and laughed, pointing at the woman’s chest. “Not with those big floaters on yer chest!” He wasn’t going to be tricked! Bulma and Master Roshi taught him how to tell the difference!
“Hey! I’m just a bit hefty is all!” The woman or man screamed at him, a large boot stomping on the ground. “Jeez…”
Maybe she was right. Maybe she was a guy, Goku had never seen a girl so hairy around the face. “Okay then. Hey, pops! Have you seen a dragon ball around here? Uh….” The guy looked stunned. “It’s, like, round and… has sta-”
“Yer-Yer th-that kid that ransacked our southern headquarters! Hey! Alert the commander!” The large man started waving at someone behind him and it wasn’t until he faced Goku again that the monkey boy noticed his hat. It had the same little picture on it from his last dragon ball excavation. They had called themselves the Red Ribbon Army and had been none too pleasant the first time around. It looked like it was a trait that they all shared. The large soldier aimed his firearm at Goku and pulled the trigger until a cloud of dust completely enveloped them. But he ultimately had hit nothing but the earth.
“Heeey!” Goku’s voice rang out behind the man. He turned in shock, but the little boy had already pulled his stubby arm back and connected it right into his large gut. Whoa! It felt like stuffing his fist into a bowl of jelly. Mmm, jelly sounded really good right now, he was getting hungry! “Welp, gotta end this quick…” Goku used the man’s mass to propel himself up into the air, unsheathing the Nyoibo, a magical staff he had received from his grandpa, and slapping the villainous soldier down before he tumbled away from the human wreckage he had caused, ending the fight with “Peace!” as per usual.
Now then, this was getting serious. He was hungry; he needed to find that dragon ball soon so he could go find something to chew on. It didn’t take long as the radar was very precise in its coordinates, you know, once he figured it out. Inside the hollow of a fallen tree, the dragon ball throbbed with a strange vibrancy that always left Goku in awe. Unfortunately, it wasn’t his grandpa’s. This one had, uhmm, it looked like six. The monkey boy put it into his satchel and walked off to leave, but something in the distance caught his eye. “Huh?” Wow, the rest of the army was running over toward him. Hey, how nice! More training.
He readied his Nyoibo and positioned himself for the attack.
