summer in sweet homa alabama

Oh, it's hot, but not like last year. Last year we had day after day after miserable day with temps. over 100. Hot enough to keep you inside, imbibing cooling liquids slowly but surely throughout the afternoon and evening.
This summer is in the 80's, but still with little rain. I know the rainy season is fall into winter, but we really could use a few storms to cool us off and bring the plants some relief from the friendly fireball of southern sunshine. There are still plenty of flowers in bloom and most of the lawns are green or at least greenish, but I wish it would break so that we could all relax a bit.
Next door neighbor has an excrutianingly ugly plant. It grows from a bulb, has nice foliage, but then has this particularly hideous orange bloom shaped like a water balloon and all spiky, like some odd fungus growth. Really atrocious.
I still enjoy looking at the hundreds of shades of green when I gaze out the back windows or sit, drowsing and dreaming, on the back porch. And now we have the bug and frog noises added to this, especially after shower or in the evening. Our back yard is full of tiny frogs about the size of a big fingernail, and good-sized, warty toads. It really is nice here, but rather enervating. I haven't done laundry in a week.
But, I have been reading, and reading, and reading. I love it.
