It's here! It's here! I never thought I'd see it again! Yeeeeessssss...fall has come, and even a couple of days early. Ah...I'm beside myself with delight. The scarlet nandina has changed from its soft summer green to an orangey-red color, I woke up Sunday and was...wait for it...chilly!, yesterday I had every window in the house open with cool breezes and cool, crystal clear blue sky and sunshine flooding the house. What a pleasure! It's good to be alive and in Alabama after 35 years in beautiful but oh-so-boring Florida, with its endless brain-frying sunshine punctuated by a few brief moments of fear about hurricanes. The air is cool and crisp, the birds are abundant and enjoying that bird bath, the trees and shrubs are oh-so-subltly changing...I love it.
More bird news: eating breakfast in downtown Columbus last week and idly gazing out the window, I noticed this really big bird fly into the parking lot. Huh, I thought, must be a vulture after some dead mess. Less than a minute later, the red-tailed hawk breezed back and was perched on a light pole, obviously seeking his own breakfast. In the middle of downtown. Wonderful. Yesterday I saw a really vivid black and white tree clinger, his color startling in its hard-edged change from dark to light. Again using my trusty Roger Tory, I found it was an immature red-headed woodpecker. Now if his parents would just show up...
I've been reading and enjoying life so much. B.B. and I haven't had a real fight or even heavy-duty argument since moving here 6 months ago, which certainly tells me something about the life we were leading in Florida. I cook (one of my true pleasures...B.B. asked which I enjoyed more, reading or cooking...it surprised me that I had to think about it for a second or three) much more imaginatively and with a much more relaxed feel, I've returned to my obsessive bird-watching, the kiddo is coming to see us in a couple of weeks, which will make my life perfect and complete. Geez, ya think I should treasure this feeling or what??? And I've decreased the meds hugely, so it ain't like I'm in some drug-driven haze. Man! I'm sure anyone reading this will think, Gad! What a Pollyanna she turned out to be...but I'm not, I don't think. Just happy as hell right now.
