Currently reading Bel Canto, an excellent read. All about the takeover of a South American country (loosely based on the takeover of the Peruvian Embassy several years ago), in which a Japanese executive, the Vice President of the country, and a famous, very talented opera singer are mistakenly among the hostages. Lots of characters, interwoven and subtly brought to life, are in a macabre dance which can't end gracefully. I'm enjoying it very much. Have also read another Shreve book........Sea Glass. This is a much more believable, down-to-earth book than some of her others, with much less of the sense of dread about a dark and punishing finish...or alternatively, a deus ex machina ending which disappoints everyone, probably including the author. Of course, I keep rereading my Christies at bedtime and am currently rereading Unnatural Death, a Sayers book I haven't read in some time. As I mentioned previously, it's impossible for me to hold a heavy book in bed...although I just saw a new pillow-type thing that looks as though it might do the trick for me. Perhaps, though, I won't need to read so much in bed once I retire. It has been nice just reading a couple or three chapters of a lightweight mystery to lull myself off to rest.
It should be obvious from this post that I have once again failed to get involved in Lolita. I haven't given up hope, though...I'll keep trying. There are so many, many books that I want to read....the lists just go on and on and keep growing; they never seem to get any shorter. Hmmmm.
