"Dr Blazina's presentation is just one out of a possible six others being held in the same time slot, including 'Not Just Good and Evil: Moral Alignment in Harry Potter' and 'Bloody Hell! Why Am I So Wild About Harry?'"
oh, so many choices!

Really though, I saw a lecture by JK rowling when the second book had just come out. I met her and she signed my Philospher's Stone book. Then, when we had to do a talk in english, i reliably informed the class i'd met Harry Potter and he'd signed my Philosopher's Stone. Looking back, that's probably when it all went wrong!

Hm, as for my thoughts to Harry Potter fandom. When the first book came out, i was Harry's age, and all of a sudden it all made sense! Good days. I remember me and my friend Annie spent a whole summer making Harry Potter stuff out of plastacine and then later, clay. It was great. Erm, and i think it's possibly a bit weird when non-teenage people do it, but really, who am i to judge.
But thinking about harry potter in an academic way is pretty silly, i think.

see when you're young enough to have grown up with Harry Potter it's a bit different. I'm all for not acting like an adult all the time...in fact I'm one of it's prime advocates amongst a sea of married and sensible friends, but the whole thing leaves a slightly nasty taste in my mouth when people get extreme. True of any fandom I think.

I don't read Harry Potter and the films make me want to claw my eyes out, but it was an interesting article. It sounds a bit like the Tolkien lectures I went to last month... only with more men. And less porn talk. And no one in costume. And in Norwich.

I loved this quote though:

There's just one man in the room who spends the entire session staring at the carpet.

I corner him on the way out. 'I came with my girlfriend!' he says, quickly.

I thought it was just about liking nice cuddly wizards, I say.

'So did I!' he says. 'Jeez! I mean.'

Hahahaha....

hehe! The whole article was amusing actually. It was well done and didn't exactly take the piss out of the fans (god knows I have had my fangirl moments) but is suitabley befuddled, as am I, by people who have slightly lost the plot.

It's always good seeing people more insane than you at geeky things. It makes you feel cooler. ;)
