I was supposed to get my next disbursement of financial aid today, and was looking forward to that. When I hadn't received anything, I contacted the financial aid office, who told me I'm supposed to re-enroll at the beginning of the term, even though my program runs January through January. So I go to do that, and there's no option for me to enroll. I contact administration to ask about this, and am told that I'm not eligible to re-enroll until I've completed my yearly review. That's Sept. 29, I believe, then it would take another week to receive any money. Two plus weeks without any money. Great. But even worse, I was also advised that there's a high chance that US financial aid deadlines for the semester will have expired by that point. So in that case, either my parents will have to just support me out of pocket until I finish the program, which is a very big expense, and I'll have no extra money for a couple of trips I had planned.....or I'll just have to pack up everything and go home, leaving all my bills unpaid, and without any money to do anything at all on. My parents would have to buy a plane ticket, and either pay all my debts, or leave them hanging, and this whole year would be for nothing at all. My landlord will be pissed, and probably will insist on continuing to bill me for the rent. And the university might expect me to pay tuition Sept - Jan, even while making it impossible for me to remain here.
So there. That's the beauty of the University of Glasgow system. And none of us were even told these things until today, the day we're supposed to get our money. I can't contact my parents at the moment to discuss anything with them, because they're on vacation in Hawaii until Sunday night.
Shocker. Will post any updates.
EDIT: Hopefully the deadline won't be past by then, and it won't be a choice between those two awful options. Also, hopefully some tech will be able to fix the glitch in the university system that doesn't account for January starts. A couple of friends of mine are going into activist mode, scheduling meetings with university officials and threatening to take actions to see that GU's tier 4 visa eligibility for US students is revoked, etc. I'm just staying behind the scenes and waiting to see what'll happen. I have no threats to make or weight to throw around, I just want my money.
