OOM: New York City, centre of the universe.

Feb 28, 2006 11:02

The door from Milliways opens on a back alley off of Avenue C. Not the best place to be in New York City, but it could be one hell of a lot worse.

Mark leads Jack through the alley, and through a bit of the chaos of Alphabet City to stand in front of a building on the corner of eleventh and Avenue B. "Welcome to the Building, Jack." He's grinning

New York certainly got busier. He could see that. The cars were smaller, sleeker, and many--the noises, simply many. And louder. He followed Mark to the building, staring up to take a look at the exterior of his new home. "How'd you ever get a place like this, anyway?"

"That's a long story." Mark points to the top floor. "I've lived up there for, somewhere close to four years now. Most of that, actually was as a squatter. I lived there as the roommate of the former owner of the building, And, well, he just became a bastard, trying to evict us after he told my roommate and I we had to pay a year's rent or be evicted. One thing led to another, and he just became an asshole. Then, well, his wife made him put the building up for sale. Another thing led to another thing, my film took off, and I bought the building." He grins. "I'm rather fond of the place, as dumpy as it has a tendancy of being."

He chuckles. "That's karma for you, I guess." Beat. "Dumpy how?"

"It's not the best area of the city." He waves a hand around idly. "Mainly homeless and squatters, and the buildings that people keep for almost povertyline housing, or just a tax shelter." He points to a vacant lot next to the building, which houses an tent city for the homeless. "Technically that's mine, too. But I just let the homeless live there. No reason to evict them." He smiles, then rummages in his pockets. "Here's a key to the front door. We usually lock it around seven or so, but obviously, you live here, so come and go however the hell late you want."
