Adjusting to Paris

Mar 21, 2003 17:26

Dearest Nana,

Ah, perhaps I should call you Grandmere now. My French is passable, although a bit rough. It will improve as I use it more, I am certain. I hope that this letter finds you well. I do miss you, and thank you from the depths of my heart for allowing me to chase my dream to Paris.

I am settled in my new apartement. It is small, yet comfortable, filled with the treasures you gifted me with. I look around and I am reminded of you always. I am blessed with your love and the love of Mariette. I hope to bring her back to England to meet you soon. She is beautiful in her heart as well as her face and tells me often how lucky I am to have a grandmere as generous and loving as you. She works now as a ladies' maid but as soon as I am settled and earning money with my paintings, we will be married and she will not have to work anymore. She is eager to begin giving you the great-grandchildren that you will spoil in the best possible way. She sends her love and respect to you.

I must go now as it is getting dark and it would be improper of me to be visiting her so late. I would not want her reputation besmirched by any of my actions. I will write more in my next letter, giving you full descriptions of my neighborhood and the interesting people I'm bound to meet.

All my love,

Your obedient grandson Sean

Sean smiles as he folds the letter, inserts it into an envelope, watches the sealing wax drip onto it, presses his signet ring onto it. He puts it by the door so he won't forget to post it in the morning.

He looks around his shabby little flat, swigging red wine straight from the bottle. Not too bad. Could be worse. I hear the neighborhood is good though. Lots of artists, dancers, people of creative spirit. He picks up a brush, daubs it in some paint, spreads the paint listlessly on a canvas. I need inspiration... He looks around the room, rummaging through various heaps of clothing until he finds something that suits him. Shrugging off his paint-splattered clothes, he dresses quickly and heads out after a few more swigs of wine, eager to meet others more of his kind.
