This Reagan speech that Perez is having us listen to for APMEH has sounded, so far, more like a polemic in favor of converting America into a Christian theocracy than anything else. Because, according to Reagan, that's what the majority of Americans want anyway.
It's a really good thing I wasn't really a sentient being for the vast majority of the eighties...he's now ranting about the establishment clause (aka my Constitutional boyfriend) and how it took away his footie pajamas or something. That's the sort of thing that would have made me take to the streets.
Oh! Update on Pretty in Pink, for those who care: I bought the "Everything's Duckie" version today and watched the featurette on the original, Duckie-centric ending. If possible, it made me even more unhappy. Molly Ringwald described practically everyone she'd ever met in her entire life as "attractive", but she couldn't even spare a single salutary adjective for the awkwardly-flailing teenage Jon Cryer. CRIMES AGAINST THE HUMAN CONSCIENCE, I SAY!
I think I could one day be happy as a liberal William Safire. Maybe not.
