Why should YOU watch the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya?
There. That is why.
No but really, Haruhi is seen as a Pretty Big Deal as far as anime is concerned. It's the show that spawned tons of memes, a fancomic that later became an official mini-show, video games, one or two drama cds and a few manga. KyoAni has trolled their audience with this show so many times it's hilarious. You've probably seen or heard of
this song, too.
And if you're not interested in watching it, you can always
read the light novels the show is based off of. The series centers on a group of five students, show above: Itsuki Koizumi, Nagato Yuki, Kyon, Suzumiya Haruhi and Asahina Mikuru. As you can see they are gangsta as fuck. The central character is, of course, Haruhi. She also happens to be have penultimate, limitless god powers. She also isn't aware of these powers, and while her mind does have a modicum of realism her goal in life is to hunt down aliens, espers, time travelers and sliders and have fun.
The series is sci-fi/supernatural, with lots of time travel shenanigans and things like the universe nearly ending due to the SOS Brigade almost losing a baseball game and aliens
occasionally having epic fights. It's goofy fun with a lot of mystery, science, and serious moments thrown into the mix. Kyon narrates the entire thing, and his deadpan snarkiness is extremely funny.
The two spinoffs,
The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan and
Nyoron Churuya-san can all be viewed on Youtube for free and there's also a movie out that is known for being really fucking pretty:
