It is has been so long since I have taken a vacation-- well at least a few months and boy is my soul aching. Luckily my travel partner needs some much needed rest and disconnection from the fast world we choose to try to keep up with. [Semi fast at least, after all we aren't in The City.] The answer to this problem, at least for me, is backpacking.
Backpacking has so many meanings it seems to be one of the best hobbies around. One gets to enjoy nature, remove themselves completely from city-life and constantantly-connected environments, excersise, eat homemade meals, and breath some good old fashioned un-canned fresh air. For me it is all of these and more. I get to approach a relaxing hobby with perfection, skill, and good planning. Nothing is more satisfying then being able to enjoy a nice vacation in which every detail, with the exception of the weather, is planned yet how the events unfold is still mysterious-. The only thing that can top this feeling is being able to share the whole experience with someone you care about and enjoy spending time with.
So as I swiftfully shift gears and gently depress the accelerator petal to engage the turbo, I'm sure the place I'm leaving will quickly become smaller in my rear view mirror. And as I hit the trail with a heavy pack and warm clothing, I know nothing can bother me anymore.
I'll let you know how it goes.
