End of the Year meme 2016

Comments are still open on the Guess the Movie Meme, and I know that at least two of you know where one quote is from... so I'm going to be mean and not post the answers yet :)

In the meantime, here's the more-or-less on-time 2016 meme!

End of the Year meme 2016

What did you do in 2016 that you'd never done before?

Went to a Passover meal/celebration. Our housegroup had a Passover meal this year - it's more of a Jewish than a Christian celebration, but it's not unknown for Christians to celebrate it and so we decided to give it a go. We actually quite liked it and plan to do so again this year.

Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Yes! I started going to church again at the start of 2016, and kept it up for the whole year! And intend to keep going this year as well. It only took me, what, 9 years to properly settle down in Fareham?

Geocaching was a bit down on 2015 so so much for that, but still better than 2014.

For this year there's the usual ones of getting out and about each weekend, but as well I want to try and explore more - so I'm going to try and find a a different English Heritage or National Trust or whatever place to visit each month. There's other resolutions as well, but those are for me to know and you to find out!

Did anyone close to you give birth?

Yes! Joshua was born to Beth and Jonners late in 2016.

Did anyone close to you die?

Sadly, also yes - Oma passed away around the start of the year.

Which countries did you visit?

None, unless the weekend break in Bristol counts in which case England.

What would you like to have in 2017 that you lacked in 2016?

I've been saying this for a long time now, but I really shouldn't still be renting. So hopefully this will be the year when I buy a house/flat of my own.

What dates from 2016 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

January, when Oma passed away - I was visiting friends from the Brighton house (though we're now the ex-Brighton group, as none of us live in Brighton anymore) when I got the news.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Returning to church again, and this time making it stick.

What was your biggest failure?

Nothing particularly epic this year, thankfully. Just far too much procrastination.

Did you suffer illness or injury?

Well November was rather bleh - I spent a couple of weeks feeling rather lurgied, annoyingly around when I'd booked time off with vague plans of spending a week down in Cornwall. That didn't happen in the end.

What was the best thing you bought?

A New Nintendo 3DSXL - the 3D effect Just Works.

Whose behaviour merited celebration?

The Brexit remain campaign, for being factual and not entirely giving in to scaremongering.

Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

The Brexit leave campaign, for ignoring facts and giving in to scaremongering.

And especially all the idiots who wanted to remain in the EU, but chose to vote leave as a protest vote because "I didn’t think my vote was going to matter too much because I thought we were just going to remain". No, I'm not joking - that's a quote from a leave voter who appeared on BBC News. To paraphrase Babbage, "I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a vote".

Where did most of your money go?

Taxman and landlord, as always. Oh, and a decent chunk of money on a new exhaust for the Alfa. LOUD MODE is expensive :(

What were you really, really, really excited about?

Giant Mecha Kirby!

What song will always remind you of 2016?

At Oma's funeral, we entered to a calm, reflective piece of traditional Gamelan music... and left to a very upbeat Jools Holland piece. It was a complete mood shift and also entirely in keeping with Oma in some way.

Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) Happier or sadder?

A bit sadder, as 2016 was a rather sucky year all round. But also happier, as I'm now involved with church and making new friends there.

b) Bigger or smaller?

About the same.

c) Richer or poorer?

Probably richer - I may now finally have enough for a deposit for a house!

What do you wish you'd done more of?

Exploring, as always.

What do you wish you'd done less of?

Procrastination, as always.

How did you spend Christmas?

Opa was visiting my aunt/uncle/cousins this year, so it was just with the family in Horsham. We all went to the Midnight Mass (another first for me), I went to the Christmas Day service, and then we had smoked salmon for an early lunch, presents, and then the traditional Christmas roast in the evening.

What was your favourite month of 2016?

Erm... lets go with April again. I like April.

What was your favourite TV programme?

The revived Robot Wars! There was always the risk of hype backlash and just being more of the same, but as it turned out the new entrants were very competitive and outclassed some of the older competitors (Razer in particular suffered badly from Badass Decay).

Oh, and Thunderbirds Are Go returned for a second series.

How did you see in the New Year?

At the Poons, watching the London fireworks on TV for a change (normally we watch the Jools Holland Hootenannry).

Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

The Brexit leave campaigners. Especially whoever decided to plaster a London bus with the bogus £350 million figure.

What was the best book you read?

A toss-up between Susan Cooper's Victory, and Sarah Maas' Throne of Glass.

What was your greatest musical discovery?

Across the Atlas.

What did you want and get?

Somehow I ended up with four different construction kits to build, plus a bonkers SCIENCE THING. I'll post photos and videos when they're done (and when I either work out how to convert the 3D videos from the 3DS into something Youtube can handle, or give in and upload 2D versions).

What did you want and not get?

For a change, instead of chocolate I'll say more tea. Specifically interesting tea - I've got plenty of ordinary tea (like Assam or Mint) in various blends.

What was your favourite film of this year?

Star Wars: Rogue One.

What did you do on your birthday?

I did the traditional delayed karting trip, this time down at the Gosport track for a change. I'd half planned to do a Go Ape outing but for various reasons that got delayed, though I'm determined that it will happen before my next birthday!

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Further advancement along the grand master plan :)

What kept you sane?

As always friends, family, church, a well-stocked MP3 player, and plenty of chocolate and tea.

Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy respect the most?

Funnily enough, David Cameron - I was quite impressed by how he handled losing the Brexit referendum.

What political issue stirred you the most?

Brexit. Sigh.

Who did you miss?

Old friends. I really should get together with them more often.

Who was the best new person you met?

Everyone at St John's Fareham - the church was just the right sort of welcoming when I appeared at the start of the year.

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2016.

xkcd #137: Dreams

Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

As always, Julian of Norwich still fits:

But all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.
