People of Walmart

Thought of the day: I think the website People of Walmart should be renamed "I hate poor people." Although I suppose if it was more honestly named, douchebag hipsters might feel guilty about having contempt for those who would rather feed their children than buy $100 t-shirts from vintage boutiques ( Read more... )

I love People of Walmart.

And I don't love People of Walmart because it mocks poor people. It doesn't necessarily. You don't know how much money those fuckers have in their bank accounts. They could be millionaires for all we know. They just have, across the board, made hilarious fashion faux pas.

There are moments, as children, where our parents are supposed to say, "You're going out in that?" and then make us go back to our room to change into something more socially acceptable.

People of Walmart throw social acceptability to the wind. Because FUCK IT! It's WALMART. To them, they might as well be going into their living room.

But even better -- as the fantastic Memphis comedian Mo Alexander says, we are ALL Walmart shoppers. Black, White, Asian, Mexican, Rich, Poor, it don't matter! We all want that rollback price and that happy smile. And we are ALL looking at that thong that is worked ALL THE WAY UP the asscrack of the woman on aisle 14, wondering, did she know her butt done swallowed the couch before she left the house? :) And why can't we look away? We don't want to look, so why are we lookin? Some things just can't be explained...

To me, at least, that's what PeopleofWalmart.com is about. That laughter. That knowing that none of us is better than Walmart, and that there's always someone out there having a bad fashion day and shopping for their Pampers, lunchables, camping gear, garbage bags, and laundry soap in not but a bikini and stripper heels, because it's time to do clothes.

Sure, there are a lot of pompous assholes out there laughing because it makes them feel better about themselves. People like to put down those who they deem "less than" themselves because, let's face it, we're a nation built on the ideal of being "the best" and needing to climb different social ladders. Any time we actually discuss equality, somehow it turns into an economics discussion and people get grouchy.

So you won't hear me telling you to loathe anybody other than douchebags (Because hipster douchebags are, by definition loatheable), but if you're having a bad hair day and don't feel like you ought to go out with friends, smoke a bowl and take a gander at PoW. If it doesn't make you feel pretty, it should at least make you giggle and take life a little less seriously. Because really, that is the point.

Maybe you aren't viewing People of WalMart out of contempt. But do you honestly believe that's true of most of its viewers.

Let's say you were feeling sick and miserable, but had to drag yourself out to the store to get a prescription filled. Then someone snaps an unflattering photo of you, and posts it on the internet saying "LOOK HOW DUMB THIS FAT UGLY BROAD LOOKS!!1!11"

Would you just smile and nod because it was all in good fun?

(Obviously I know you aren't dumb, fat, or ugly. But everyone's capable of looking bad on a bad day, and it's not like anonymous assholes on the Internet care about veracity.)
