They mentioned that things depend a lot on what sort of work you want to do, like if you end up doing archival work at a university, you might have to get a second advanced degree anyway, whereas if you ended up working for Marvel Comics (I wish!*), clearly you don't need an advanced degree for that.
I dunno, they just made the whole thing sound super exciting, like we're hunting for treasures, polishing them up, and then showing them off to the whole world. Someone asked showed concern about being stuck in some attic or basement in isolation while doing this sort of work, which was one of my concerns, too, and they said that this also depends on where you're employed. It actually sounded like there's a lot of opportunity to interact with people, and they seemed to encourage students in writing papers and attending conferences to report their findings and stuff. Very cool.
* Actually, I sort of prefer DC Comics, because Vertigo is an excellent imprint. They only mentioned Marvel cos someone got to intern there.
