FOOD NOT LAWNS

May 18, 2007 12:43

Newly sprung in our neighborhood. That's an edible front garden you see before you.

Haven't I seen that somewhere before? Yes I have; growing up in Wimbledon ("Anyone for tennis?") with a rural Scotsman for a father, we grew potatoes in the front garden to the horror of the neighbours (yes, that's neighbours with a 'U').

But there's a caveat to this: my dad before he died had learned that flowers too have an essential function; BEAUTY. He got it that that beauty is an essential ingredient for our spirits. That's a good life lesson.
So just don't give up on flowers or at least grow Nasturtians or other edible flowers..

from the Slow Food Chapter in Buffalo
"The Edible Flowers dinner was a smashing success. We would like to thank Sharon Osgood for the use of her home (Happy Birthday!!) and everyone who attended for the wide variety of dishes and making it fun.

Tracy Gaus from Herbly Wonderful provided the flowers for many of our cooks and gave an excellent talk on the subject. If you are interested in cooking with flowers in Western New York, they are an excellent source. You should purchase flowers for consumption through a specialist (or grow your own!) to ensure that flowers for consumption have not been exposed to pesticides or other dangerous chemicals that are used to make decorative flowers last longer or appear more attractive."
