A lot has happened since I last updated, huh?
I finished my Jewish Scriptures paper, which means that it's time to start my Sociology of Culture paper. It was originally intended to be about blaxploitation and it's effects on blacks within the film industry, but that's proven to be very difficult. There doesn't seem to be too many academic papers on blaxploitation, which is confusing and disappointing not just for my research, but the academic community as well. In either case, it throws a cog in my sprocket-run research machine, and I have to think of an alternative fast. I'm thinking simply mapping the evolution of black sterotypes in American film. That might be a bit more broad then a single film genre, but I'll head to the WRC tomorrow to see what's what. It should be an interesting paper, since the paper is actually an extensive thesis proposal, which is really odd. No matter.
Speaking of race, I'm almost finished with The Autobiography of Malcom X. I'm not even finished with it yet, but I can tell you that's already shaped my paradigm of race, although I have reservation about it that I will get into once I finish the book. I'll probably see the film soon afterwards as well.
Speaking of films, I saw a few films since I last updated. Most notably, Man Bites Dog, which I thought was spectacular and will soon be on my self. The film reminded me that people can make films about anything they want, in any way they want. It's so well written and acted, and it's just really funny. It's very effective. Irreversible was really bad. Frustrating cinematography, bullshit storytelling, and inexplicable subplots just don't add up to a fun time at the movies. It's only redeeming quality was Vincent Cassel, and that's really just a preference. I find him oddly aesthetically pleasing. I also saw Akira last night, and I didn't really like it. The animation quality was amazing for 1985, and the music was great.. Everything else was just not my bag. The real treat was Man Bites Dog. Cameron told me that he read that some critics have said that the film was a social commentary on violence in the media, but that Remy or Benoit or someone else working on that film wrote that they just wanted to have fun and make a good film.
I'll be doing FARF next year with Cameron, so that will be interesting, and a lot of fun for me, and hopefully for others.
Anyway, I started playing Super Mario RPG. It's pretty addicting. The humor isn't as good as Paper Mario: Legned of the 1,000 Year Door or whatever it's called, but it's still pretty funny. It's a tad easy though. Oh well.
Here's the trailer for Man Bites Dog. The trailer is pretty intriguing if I don't tell you what the film is about.
