Here's some upcoming shows I'd like to catch if anyone wants to join me:
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. I've been wanting to see these guys for years. Last time they were supposed to play here they cancelled, and this tour they didn't schedule Philly on it at all. Anyway, they have shows Saturday 4/18 in NYC and Tuesday 4/21 in Doylestown and I'm willing to go to either provided someone else wants to go along. Anyway, these guys are not just a pretentious rock band, they're also a pretentious performance art group. Musically they're very avant-garde and jump everywhere from growly metal to odd world music-y stuff to eerie-childlike sing-song and lots of other styles, often times in the same song. They take a lot of influence from the Secret Chiefs 3 and Mr. Bungle but are nowhere near as cartoonish as the latter. Their live shows are known to include things like puppet shows and fake scientific presentations (one of which, they explain that they're going to show a specimen from what was believed to be an extinct species, man).
Here's some songs, and
here's some youtubes.
Mastodon. Playing friday 5/8. METAL. And good metal at that. They don't fit squarely in with any style out there (they're progressive but they're very fluid and heavy unlike most of the robotic bands like Dream Theater that get the prog-metal label, they can thrash, but they're not a thrash group, they have doom metal influence but they're not a doom band, etc.). Just all around awesome. And to top that off, they'll be playing their soon to be released new album in its entirety during the show: "There's something about [the album] where it would be weird to leave a song out. We'll incorporate a whole stage show, which will hopefully make it even more exciting for kids to come see and more visually stimulating."
Here's some youtubes.
I think Cursive and Themselves are supposed to be playing in the near future too, but they haven't announced tour dates yet.
edit: I knew I forgot something. Les Claypool (from Primus), the Secret Chiefs 3 (members of Mr. Bungle doing mostly middle Eastern stuff mixed with western music like techno, metal, jazz, etc.), Saul Williams (Trent Reznor produced rap), and O'Death (bluegrass/folk/gypsy/punk/jazz) are all playing Friday 3/27. It should be awesome.
