The bike shop is super backed up today. It usually gets a bit packed on Friday, but this is just getting silly. A professor came in today with a flat tire and asked whether we were backed up and if he would be able to get his bike back in the afternoon. I kinda wanted to get flippant with him; I can't walk two feet without almost tripping over a bike, and I had to lean way over to use the wheel-truing stand because there were too many bikes in front of it. I remained calm and told him that he'd have to wait a while, but that we'd call him when we were done with his bike.
It seems that a lot of people don't understand simple things. I've had more people than I care to count come into the shop as ask when we were open. We have the hours posted a foot away from the door, and you're guaranteed to pass them on the way in.
I don't get the people who rely so heavily on their bikes to get around but don't do anything to take good care of their bikes. I spent all of my shifts for two days trying to disassemble a bottom bracket that turned out to be full of rust, with half the bearings kicking around loose because the cage for the right side had rusted out. I ended up having to give up because the right crank was totally frozen onto the shaft, and the threads on it were so stripped out that the bottom bracket tool was just slipping out and pulling out what was left of the threads, rather than popping the crank off the shaft. I hate having to give up, even if I don't think the bike's owner deserves to have a bicycle until she can take better care of it.
