Exploring new shows

Aug 31, 2011 23:41

I checked out two new shows in the past two days, after hearing high amounts of praise.

Skins is a series about British teenagers and their issues, including unsafe sex, drugs, eating disorders, more unsafe sex, class conflicts, and driving on the wrong side of the road into a pond. That was the first episode. The characters are well-drawn - some ( Read more... )

SPIRITED. I cannot recommend it enough. I haven't loved anything this much since Buffy.

Oh, except I think you don't want to download, right?

The ease of streaming does make streamed shows more tempting

When it comes to downloading, I already have Torchwood MD and Supernatural lined up on my to-watch list. But I have your page of Spirited links bookmarked, so I will get to it one day :D

I have never even heard of Wilfred. I have to say, watching a character be humiliated and emasculated before taking his proper manly place in society does not appeal to me. At all. And Skins does sound a bit stark for me, too.

However, I already have bunches of TV to watch when I do feel up to watching TV. Which wasn't tonight, apparently; I curled up on the couch with my popcorn and watched old-school SPN.

Which episode of Wilfred did you watch? The pilot was really, really, really good. I think you kinda have to go in realizing that we're getting a skewed look at this world, because it's all from Ryan's POV. So people/things are scarier/shriller, etc. because of Ryan's anxieties. I think it's also a fun send-up of those boy-meets-dog stories in which the dog changes the boy for the better. Also, I love dogs, but think they're frequently disgusting, so this show is right on my wavelength.

That said, I am way, way behind on that show. From what I've watched, the pilot is still the best episode. I love the many revisions of the suicide note. :)

If you did watch the pilot ... ignore me. **slinks away**

I did watch the pilot :)

I agree, the suicide note sequence was laugh out loud funny, as was the entire "suicide" sequence. The beatific look of Wood's face, the Death Smoothie, his increasing agitation when nothing happened...it was comedy gold.

I think the show is excellent at what it's trying to do, which is upturning the old "boy becomes man with help of mentor" story and making fun of it. But it's accomplishing that through a lot of tropes that personally annoy me.

It may be fairest to say it is a good show that was not made for me.

Arrested Development is the new love of my life, and I highly recommend it to everyone ever. I literally don't remember the last time any show (or any work of fiction, actually) made me laugh so hard.

Miranda, a BBC show, is also quite excellent if you haven't tried that already.

I've seen gif-spam of Miranda on Tumblr and it looks awesome. Is it available online?

It is available online (illegally), although some episodes are harder to find than others (they used to all be on YouTube, but I think a few of them have been taken off). Here's the link to the first part of the first episode on YouTube, though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GymUCt_MFoY. Let us know what you think if you watch it! There are tons of Miranda fans in our corner of fandom. :)
