As you probably know, I work for Pearson Education, the largest publisher of textbooks in the world. And unlike a lot of the rest of the economy, Pearson is doing fine - because recession or no recession, students still buy textbooks.

If you are looking for work, I will happily give you a referral if you can convince me that you'd be good. (Referrals are big at Pearson - I was hired via a referral, and I've successfully referred 2 other employees.) Here are some entry-ish-level positions open in Boston. Editorial Assistant (2 positions open)
Position and compensation: entry-level, compensation probably a little over $30k per year, but with very valuable and high-quality benefits and a bonus plan.
Growth opportunities: Most people stay in assistant-level positions 1-3 years. If you want to stay within the company, there are numerous paths upward including through sales, media, project management, or marketing.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree required. Must have demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. Outstanding organizational, administrative, and interpersonal skills are essential. Computer literacy including word processing, spreadsheets, and the internet required. A desire and ability to work effectively with minimal supervision is important. Strong interest in publishing preferred.
Summary and Responsibilities:
Provide assistance in all phases of developing, processing, and producing collegiate mathematics textbooks. No math background required (although math background is a plus).
Provide assistance in all aspects of manuscript and product development. Research competitive book information. Work with authors; establish and monitor schedules. Secure reviewers for manuscript appraisal and oversee review process.
Work with other internal departments to assure timely development of all titles. Interact with company sales representatives and work with list marketing manager as necessary. Work with editor to conduct market research as directed. Analyze competing products. Maintain inventory of competitor catalogs and books as directed. Provide appropriate information on relevant titles to Marketing and the sales staff. Assume additional responsibilities as assigned.

Multimedia Producer
Position and compensation: can be entry-level or can be intermediate-level; compensation varies with experience, probably starting around $35k per year, but with very valuable and high-quality benefits.
Growth opportunities: Most people stay in producer positions 1-5 years. If you want to stay within the company, there are numerous paths upward including through sales, media, editorial, project management, marketing, or managing other media folks.
Requirements:
BA or equivalent. Candidate does not need programming skills but should have a solid understanding of online educational environments, as well as interest and experience in managing complex multimedia projects. At least 2 years of experience in educational media production (Academic publishing background preferred). At least 1 year of experience managing employees and/or freelancers & vendors. Excellent project management skills and attention to detail. Excellent communication skills. Ability to collaborate and lead in a team environment. Ability to facilitate consensus among a group of stakeholders. Advanced Microsoft Office skills required. Basic HTML a plus.
Summary and Responsibilities:
• Coordinate with all members of the product and book teams to ensure that courses are completed on time, collaborating with book teams during all phases of project planning, development, and production.
• Maintain media grids for Mastering content, such as end-of-chapter questions and study area assets.
• Look up and publish problems using the Mastering authoring tool.
• Own the budget for media projects; Xprocess invoices and monitor spending.
• Set up access codes for access kits and class tests.
• Manage vendors, content providers, and freelancers for projects as needed.
• Coordinate the integration of external media assets (animations, eTexts, etc.) and Pearson systems (WPS, PMS, SMS, etc.) with the Mastering platform.
• Serve as part of the overall Pearson Science/Mastering team, collaborating with content and product managers as needed to ensure optimal media strategy.
