Audition Pwnage

I so nailed both my first-round auditions and callbacks for The Sorcerer.

I was called back for the roles of Alexis Pointdextre (the tenor lead), John Wellington Wells (the title character), and Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre (Alexis' father).

I was honestly quite surprised that they called me back for Alexis, since I'm not a tenor. Sometimes I can hit all the notes he has to sing, but I wouldn't want to promise that I can hit them reliably ten shows in a row. Still, my callback for that part went relatively well. In the script he has a prominent but boring part - the director has some characterization in mind for him that will make him much more interesting. Instead of posing him as the young idealist, the director wants him to be kind of a well-intentioned douche, very self-important and maybe a little dandy-ish.

John Wellington Wells is the part I really want, although I think it's unlikely that they'd give the title role to a non-Harvard student. This was, however, my strongest performance I think! I showed that I was very flexible with my characterization. Of the different interpretations that I offer, the producers and directors seemed to like the best a sort of stuffy middle-aged eccentric salesman (who is of course also a frighteningly powerful conjuror).

Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre would be a fun part to do. His part fits neatly in my baritone range, and I could do some interesting things with his character. He's a very stuffy, paternal, old-fashioned gentleman who values propriety and chivalry - and thanks to a love potion created by J.W.Wells at Alexis' bidding, his sense of propriety goes out the window halfway through the show. My audition for this role went fairly well - I didn't play around with his voice too much, and just used an ordinary booming voice brushed with an all-purpose English accent.

The cast list will be posted Monday evening. Casting policy is that they must make reasonable effort to cast Harvard students ahead of others, but they've bent the rule in the past for talented outsiders. Even if they just put me in the chorus again I'll be in the show, but I'm eagerly looking forward to see the final list!
