Heroes 1x23 How to Stop an Exploding Man - Census

May 22, 2007 00:03

Spoilers through 1x23! Please only have spoilers through S1 in the comments of this post; I'll be setting up another one later for S2 spoilers and speculation.

Race

Hey, Ando and DL have survived!

These are going to be more general notes, as opposed to the character-by-character ones.

coffeeandink has noted the strange race and gender segregation with Niki holding Molly and DL holding Micah around the end.

I cheered when we got to see Simone and her dad again, but then booed as Mr. Deveaux turned out to be nothing more than a Magical Negro, brought on board to inspire Peter. On the other hand, given that he seems to have powers or knows people who do, I am hoping that the scene was also a way to set up his presence in the next season, given the generations thing.

I was really glad to see Hiro and Ando's interactions, but other than that, the finale really felt like it was about White Boys Duking It Out. Granted, the other characters did have a part to play in the giant showdown, but I felt like their parts were largely truncated for the Petrelli drama.

Hiro and Ando got to bravely confront Sylar, but it all turned out to be for naught. DL didn't actually do much except phase through a wall. Mohinder did get some good scenes with Molly but mostly ran around bandaging people. In the end, the focus was on Nathan and his choice and Peter and his choice.

On the other hand, I am amused that most of the body count for the past two episodes have been white males, because I am evil like that.

Gender

Again, I thought the finale was really just White Boys Duking It Out, particularly when Niki showed up to brain Sylar with a parking meter (awesome!), only to be told by Peter to watch over her family.

Also, we had the appearance of the Mother Goading Son to Evil here, this time not at all subtly. I mean, yay, older woman with power but... boo using power to not try and stop the explosion of New York.

Claire thankfully got to be active again, but I felt like that was truncated as well -- Nathan stepping in right at the moment when Claire might have saved the world, thereby making "Save the cheerleader, save the world" more active and less passive than it actually played out. Niki recovered her powers or reintegrated herself or something, but didn't end up doing much with it except get people out of the building. Candice and Molly get supporting roles but not that much development; hopefully there will be some next season.
