I just finished Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. It's about a hermaphrodite and about her/his Greek family. I was initially intrigued by the book because of the subject of hermaphrodism, but it actually doesn't even get into that until the latter part of the book.
Most of the book is the tale of a Greek family, who had lived in Smyrna in Turkey until the Turks drove the Greeks out. The book covers the lives of the main character's family as they come to America and settle in the Detroit area. So the book is about a lot of things; only one story-line is about how the main character grows from a girl to a man...
In the end, we see that everyone has their own unique story to tell. Some stories may be more unusual in some aspect or another, but then again, where there are differences, we all have plenty in common as well.
