40 years ago today - 3 June 1967 - I was married to the girl I met on a blind date in September of my freshman year of college. I spent the entire date talking about my high school sweetheart and how we would be married after I graduated. We even had names for the first two children picked out. Silly me. 44 years later I am still married to the girl I met on that September evening in distant Iowa.
I was just commissioned and had a month off before reporting to my first duty station awaiting my class in Naval Flight School. We got married in a small church in her home town and proceeded to our honeymoon in the only place we could afford, the unfinished upstairs of my parent's garage.
She has stuck with me from the highs of my career in the Navy and through the last, almost, 30 years of increasing disability. She helps me get in and out of bed on my good days and takes care of me when I have a fever and can not even get out of bed. I've been very very lucky.
oh, and the high school girlfriend. I still communicate with her on a several times a week basis and she is also happily married with two kids who recently finished there education and are both degreed engineers.
