'Lovestrong' review

I got Christina Perri's "Lovestrong" a while ago, and i've been listening to it since then, but i've only begun to realize how sad of an album it is. The folk-y album, littered with the influences of Sara Bareilles and Sarah McLachlan, is one of the most mournful collections of tunes i've ever heard, and that's saying something coming from an Evanescence fan.

There are the occasional forays into the Happy, with 'Arms' and 'Penguin,' but other than those two it's prettymuch a straight-shot into the rum (grape juice) filled nights of barren loneliness. That's not to say it's a bad album. Quite the contrary. Her singing style, while not completely orthodox, aids the tortured torch-singer's tunes on her debut, making up for what is sometimes uninspired production and lack-luster songwriting on a couple tracks.

My personal favorites besides the sleeper hit 'Jar of Hearts' are 'Distance' and 'The Lonely,' but the only problem is my heart feels like it's breaking every time i listen to them and i feel like i should be reaching for the tissue box rather than belting alongside her. That being said, i do enjoy the album, even more so now that i'm starting to grow weary of the repetitive, derivative pop/techno pack that make up the radio repertoire and come in droves, all claiming to fill the ever-present "feel good music" void that popular artists seem to think exists. Either that, or they don't know what else to sing about but drugs, sex, and parties. Doesn't matter as long as it has a driving house-beat. But that's a different rant.

As for Perri and her set, the love is strong with this one (thee wat i did thurr?) and hopefully she'll stay around for at least an album or two more. B
