Our Little Community looks to be headed into some warmer weather in the near future. I remember when I first moved out to my two-and-a-half acres back in April of ‘97. I wasn’t sure what I had gotten myself into. I could sit out front of my property on Winters Road and not see a car pass me by for a couple of days or more; it kinda made me wonder what the hell I was thinking about.

At least I had a solar panel and battery to power a fan that I placed on the headboard with a little LED light for reading. Unfortunately, the LED light drew in those darn flying ants that would get caught in the fan blades, chopping them up mighty good. They’d land on me and the bed. The darndest thing to see is their tiny disembodied heads and other parts still moving around looking for the rest of themselves; disgusting, I know.

Since I didn’t have a swamp cooler at the time, the temps would rise too high inside, and I would run outside for a few minutes and then run back in; miracle upon miracles, it’d be cooler inside. Something I learned to do in the summer months was to open all windows at night to let the cool desert air in and close them in the morning... I’d do just the opposite during winter. You become creative when you don’t have much to work with.

So, here I am, after all these years still living on the mesa, still writing for the Hi-Desert Star Newspaper I began in December ‘99, with about a 10-year respite when Annelies Kuiper took over the reins. Do I regret moving out here... nope. I’ve met some mighty fine folks and made many lifelong friends who have helped me keep my sanity through these many years of desert life. Ah, the memories I made and stories I could tell.

Did you know dragonflies have 6 legs but can't walk?

Thought for the Day: If we all decided to leave Earth and left it to the animals to evolve on their own... would they miss us?
