Housing troubles

May 30, 2009 16:25

Yesterday we came home to two wonderful things. The first was in the mail and involved our rent going up. The reason given for our rent increase was the increase in property taxes. The landlord mentioned the increase of 14% to 15% of the local property taxes. So, he decided that our rent needed to be increased by 10%. I'll have to talk with him about this, because if he thinks that I'm falling for the "property taxes" excuse he will be sadly mistaken. I don't mind that he's increasing our rent. I DO mind that he's making up a BS excuse for it.

The other problem is our swamp cooler went down again. This normally isn't too much of a problem, but our landlord, who normally calls a handy man to fix the shit, is out of town on a vacation. Our neighbors offered to let us use their ladder to get up on the room the first time this thing crapped out on us, but it's only a 200lb weight limit ladder. This thing did not even pretend to be able to hold me. So, Nikki had to get on the roof in an attempt to fix it in the past.

This time, we bought a ladder, one beefy enough to hold me. I took a look at this decrepit, Frankenstein's Monster of a swamp cooler for the first time just a bit ago. After some gawking and vomiting on the roof, I figured out that the pump had sucked up a diaper or someth and bit the dust. So, Nikki has just returned with repair implements from the store. Now, I'm going to venture back on the the roof to do epic battle with this abomination of not-so-modern science.
