the natives have been growing restless and clammoring for an update, so here goes. really, it was only one native constituting the restless demand.
anyway, i've just been busy with school and such. this is really, truly my last semester of college. i don't guess i can stretch it out any further. i suppose i could go to law school like cynthia, but that's not happening. i think i'm ready to be out. i'm ready to buy a house. i'm ready to have a big tv. i'm ready to be responsible.
so, i need to find a job. i've found some decent leads, but nothing is really happening. right now, if i could choose, i'd like to get the job i applied for on the southern company (alabama power) website. it's an entry level engineer position with their environmental strategy group. it sounds a lot like what i did at US steel back in the day. a job with nissan in nashville wouldn't be bad, either. really, i just want my own place with a big tv.
i honestly think i would be happy to settle in birmingham for the time being. i might even be happy to just settle in birmingham permanently. when i go to other cities, i don't ever get the feeling that my life would be any better there. also, i don't exactly see myself picking up any cool points, regardless of where i live. maybe in a few years i could leave birmingham, but i think if that happened, it would be about as likely to seattle or portland as nashville or atlanta.
the job search/life planning part of my time has been forced into the backseat, behind the amount of time i spent at school. i find myself spending 10-12 hours on campus at least once or twice a week. next week that might double. my reward will be seeing wilco from the 2nd row in meridian, mississippi on wednesday night.
once next week is over, spring break commences. for basically the first time ever, i am actually "going on" spring break. destin is my destination. that was lame. a bunch of MBA people are occupying 2 houses there for the better part of the week. i decided to get in on that action. it should be a good time, but i'll split time there and in fort walton, where paul and crew will be.
as for matters other than school and jobs, i've been to the ryman auditorium in nashville twice in the past month. first was sigur ros, then this past week was belle & sebastian and the new pornographers. both were great shows. ok, i've really got very little else to share, but it might be awhile before another update, so here's some tidbits:
lately, most of my listening has involved these:
happenstance - rachel yamagata
sun, sun, sun - the elected
the life pursuit - belle & sebastian
twin cinema - the new pornographers
summer in abaddon - pinback
that rachel yamagata album is great. my impression is that it sounds like norah jones and fiona apple had a baby. she was at city stages this year, but i think she was primarily overlooked as just the person playing before ryan adams.
as for twin cinema, the song "the bleeding heart show" is probably the best song ever.
lastly, the other day in class, we were served alcohol at 8am, then had a guest speaker refer to whistle-blower protection in the following terms: "it is better to kiss your job goodbye than have someone kissing your ass in prison." he meant it in the grossest connotation, so there's some food for thought as i depart.
