last night on US highway 45 between meridian and columbus, mississippi, i swerved to miss a huge deer running across the 2-lane highway. i swerved left into the oncoming lane of traffic, which fortunately was unoccupied, but there was a car coming in the near distance. once i had cleared the deer, i swerved back to the right to get back into my lane. since i was moving 60-65 miles per hourat the time, i could not recover fast enough to stay on the road. i went off the right side of the road, down an embankment and into thick brush before coming to a stop. the car was completely in the brush, but luckily i didn't hit any trees, just lots of branches. i was able to put the car in reverse and back out of the brush and back up the embankment along the same path i took on my way in. the car behind me happened to be a large pickup and they stopped to make sure i was ok and offer to pull me out if necessary. remarkably, i was able to get the car back on the road without help, the car still ran and me and cynthia had absolutely zero injuries. given the circumstances, to emerge with maybe a bump on the head or a sore neck would have been fortunate, but there wasn't even anything of that sort. basically, we got lucky. since it was dusk, there was limited visibility and i did what i had to do. hitting the deer would have been very bad and not just for the deer. things would have also been much worse if we had hit a tree, especially considering the speed the car was moving (the speed limit was 65). my eyes were on the road and i reacted as soon as i saw the deer, so it's was just one of those things. we were on our way from new orleans to starkville, mississippi to see robert randolph and the family band, which still happened. we made it to starkville and back to tuscaloosa without any further incident. the car is scratched up along the passenger side and there are a couple of small dents, but like i said, we got lucky. the car will still require a little bit of repair, including a new radio antenna, but i can deal with that after finals.
it's hard to think back to before the events of last night, but new orleans was a great time. we saw wilco at the state palace theater on thursday night, which was a great show. the setlist was very simiar to the one from birmingham back in february and just as well performed. apparently thursday night was jeff tweedy's first ever show as a non-smoker, which he seemed quite proud of. he even made reference to being straight-edge these days. he furthered that point by saying "being straight-edge in my day meant you listened to minor threat". amusing.
the rest of the time in new orleans was spent walking and driving around. we spent some of friday afternoon in the french quarter, but a vast majority of the time was spent uptown in the garden district, especially along magazine street, where cynthia's brother lives. we had some great meals and great weather, so i can't complain. i complain too much anyway as it is.
tomorrow marks the beginning of dead week. it's hard to believe that this semester is almost over, and with it my first year of MBA. i still do not have an internship for the summer, but hopefully i'll have at least one more interview before the end of the week. unless i find another academic program to enter, i will only have one more year of school. granted, most people stop at the end of undergraduate, if not (much) sooner. i've hung around for a long time now and i've still got another year, but i can imagine most of next year being how this year has been recently. i've made a point of focusing on schoolwork more and i think it's paying off. i should make only A's and B's this semester and maybe more A's than B's. my performance over the next 2 weeks will go a long way in determining that, though.
